Posted by Data in Cortex Command - March 30th, 2009

IGF madnessWow. Just back and recovering from the alternate dimension known as the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. In the Independent Games Festival which is part of the larger GDC, Cortex Command won two (!!!) awards: Technical Excellence and the Audience Award. The latter was probably mainly due to our amazingly supportive fans here in the Data Realms community. So, thank you guys and gals; we will be doing our best giving back the love for a long time to come!

By the time the second CC award was announced during the ceremony, I was already quite drunk and lost a bet to Kyle of 2DBoy (hence the shirtless nonsense) —>

Data is going back to sleep for a few more days now; will be gradually updating the photo gallery with the complete week’s coverage. UPDATE: ALL PHOTOS ARE NOW UP

Thanks again everyone!

Congrats, may you know that you deserved those two awards!

  6. TFSR - # March 30th, 2009 at 2:31 pm

Daniel Tabar, he is a TERMINATOR.

  7. JeCa - # March 30th, 2009 at 2:31 pm

Yay, nice to see this game getting some love. Last time a game I was interested in won something like this was when N1.4 got the audience choice back in 2004. And well, they got a ship to the XBLA a while later, so let’s hope this’ll bring CC some more popularity. I love how during both of the nominations the crowd cheered about three times as much as with any other game (save Dyson) and I bet they would’ve cheered even more had they seen that stomach beforehand. :P

  8. Bing Wing95 - # March 30th, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Congrats Data. I knew this game was going to win awards.

  9. Chineseboy17 - # March 30th, 2009 at 2:44 pm

Kind Regards to Danny. Hope he’s ok.

  10. Tomaster - # March 30th, 2009 at 3:37 pm

Awesome, you deserve it Data. Now publish the next build, bitch. But only if you want to.

  11. Seraph - # March 30th, 2009 at 3:40 pm

Fuckin’ A Data, nice to see some recognition for this little piece of awesome you’ve been making.

  12. Data - # March 30th, 2009 at 5:05 pm

ChineseBoy: Yes, he’s out of the hospital and doing OK. Thanks for the note, I’ll pass it along.

  13. Will - # March 30th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Now we know why build 23 is so late, Data has been spending too much time at the gym! ;D

  14. BK - # March 30th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

CONGRATS! Its good to see the success of the game so far.

  15. zalo - # March 30th, 2009 at 7:51 pm

Awesome, it’s great that you’ve won awards.
Maybe after CC gains some momentum it’ll win more!

  16. Geti - # March 30th, 2009 at 9:29 pm

    Gratz!
Hope Danny gets better, but its great that this happened. CC needs more recognition; this should help it along.

  17. PsyberianHusky - # March 30th, 2009 at 11:10 pm

The Best things out of this years GDC where all indie in my opinion.

If half of a game can win 2 awards think what the full version is gonna get. (4 awards?)

  18. Mooseral - # March 30th, 2009 at 11:48 pm

Aha! I was right! He was in an alternate dimension/paradox!

Also, I didn’t know that you could make movie players start at anything other than the beginning like that. Also also, lol.

  19. udm - # March 31st, 2009 at 12:37 am

Grats, so what are you going to do with that $2500? Moar gunz?

  20. udm - # March 31st, 2009 at 12:38 am

    Oops I mean $5000

  21. BBR - # March 31st, 2009 at 12:46 am

    Awesomeness!
    Well deserved.

  22. Chris K. - # March 31st, 2009 at 3:13 am

Good one Data. I’m going to need to go to the gym more now. You little indie hulk you.

  23. w33n - # March 31st, 2009 at 6:53 am

    Congrats, Data.

  24. KarvaBopi - # March 31st, 2009 at 8:37 am

Congrats and all kind of stuff like that.

  25. BerkleyJ - # March 31st, 2009 at 9:39 am

So, what about. oh. I don’t know, WORKING ON THE GAME for once. You haven’t released a new PC build for 5 MONTHS. Let alone posted any sign that you’ve actually worked on the game since then. How bout a progress update every week or so about what you’ve been working on. You kinda started to post progress updates then you suddenly stopped. I think your Loyal consumers who bought the game and allowed you to win those awards at IGF deserve to know what’s going on. As far as I know Cortex Command is dead.

  26. Krumbs - # March 31st, 2009 at 10:22 am

I’m glad Danny is fine now, that’s some cracking music for Cortex Command he’s made and it would be a shame for him to stop. Also I hope you take my advice in buying a new chair, I’ve seen your current one, it ain’t pretty.

  27. robolee - # March 31st, 2009 at 10:42 am

I use a hard wooden chair, it ain’t comfy :(
And how have you seen data’s chair?

  28. Beavos - # March 31st, 2009 at 11:27 am

    Hail hail Cortex Command!!

  29. Krumbs - # March 31st, 2009 at 11:36 am

Yes I have Lee, it’s a pretty basic chair, like the ones you get in school.

  30. Bullion - # March 31st, 2009 at 2:16 pm

    @25

Robo, there was a dev update a while back with a video of Blurst Studios and Data working on Gatling Gun spin up. (Hard at Work or Hardly Working?)

I’ll admit although I wasn’t surprised it won Tech Exellence I was somewhat to hear it got the audience award (blah blah I’m a heathen) since the game is missing quite a bit next to the finished games up there. HAIL THE CRAB BOMB! HAIL!

  31. Godless - # March 31st, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Congrats to Data, this game deserves the recognition, your chest looks bump-mapped, etc. :)

At the risk of segueing into negativity, I agree with Berkleyj about the CC-related devposts: they’re a rarity.

  32. Blarg - # March 31st, 2009 at 5:33 pm

    *applause*
Its about time cc won awards! Congrats. So uh… next cc build time? With all respect… i am losing my patience.

  33. TFSR - # March 31st, 2009 at 6:04 pm

Forums are down for me, something about more than the max allowed connections. If anyone else is having this problem, I’ll be on the docks at 12 noon everyday– I mean, then it’s actually good: massive traffic increase!

  34. Thomas - # March 31st, 2009 at 6:18 pm

DATA is ripped! Just look at those pecs and those wonderful abs!

  35. Lambda/Hobbesy - # March 31st, 2009 at 6:47 pm

I’m afraid to request things from Data now that I know he could beat me up. :C

  36. neoseeker - # March 31st, 2009 at 7:17 pm

    data is fuckin ripped.

    kudos on the pecks

  37. Shard - # March 31st, 2009 at 7:30 pm

    @31

Same problem for me, I was about to download something too.

  38. XxNoBexX - # March 31st, 2009 at 8:06 pm

    Go Data!….

Now that it’s done, when is the new build coming out? XD

Gogogo, there’s work to be done, and orphan child to be eaten!

  39. Tomaster - # March 31st, 2009 at 8:47 pm

BerkleyJ, shut the fuck up. He went for 6 months without releasing a single dev update, if I remember right. Additionally, I don’t remember how many times this has been said, but he has absolutely no obligation to do anything for you. Have some patience.

  40. Coops - # March 31st, 2009 at 11:20 pm

I agree with Tomaster… Data has other things to do than “JUST” work on CC. Example: LOOK AT THOSE PEKS! Besides if we rush him the game will end up with too many problems in it and cause him to take longer to finish, would you like that? i don’t think any of us would want that.

  41. Exalion - # March 31st, 2009 at 11:55 pm

Stop having fun and do some work!

  42. Kallemort - # April 1st, 2009 at 4:55 am

So Data has seen two King novel references so far, the Mist and the Dark Tower.

  43. Warman - # April 1st, 2009 at 7:23 am

This is where I wish Data was called Danielle Tabards and had large breasts.
    lol.

  44. Twad - # April 1st, 2009 at 8:53 am

    Congratulations!

  45. Warman - # April 1st, 2009 at 11:42 am

whoops, wrote Tabards instead of Tabard. My mistake.

  46. Kenny Compton - # April 1st, 2009 at 1:27 pm

This is probably the single greatest gaming news I’ve heard all month, belay the fact that it’s the first of April, obviously. Congratulations to the entire developing team.
I think I speak for everyone here when I say that Cortex Command is an extremely anticipated game, and the full release is sure to be a hit.

  47. Kenny Compton - # April 1st, 2009 at 1:31 pm

    P.S.

As far as I’m concerned, BerkleyJ isn’t a real fan. Having patience is all there is during the development of a product, especially one with as much hype as this. Data and the team are not trying to disappoint the crowd, and people like you make the fans seem childish. Have some patience, and play the one you have now. I’m sure your world isn’t going to end.

  48. stdioo - # April 1st, 2009 at 10:09 pm

    Congratulations, guys!!! :D

  49. Rob - # April 2nd, 2009 at 3:51 am

id say data’s speech was pretty genius
screw words. just take your top off and let that be the end of it :D

  50. Toad - # April 2nd, 2009 at 12:31 pm

    That’s 2DBoy?!?!? Man, he sure works out a lot…

  51. D - # April 2nd, 2009 at 2:39 pm

    >>Where is the build devman? You said there would be build?

    Lol trollan.

  52. Zinc - # April 2nd, 2009 at 2:56 pm

@Toad, the guy with his shirt off is our Data. :D

  53. LL331 - # April 2nd, 2009 at 3:03 pm

    no that is dan.

  54. Azukki - # April 2nd, 2009 at 8:21 pm

IGF build’s free full game password is now no good.
So now I’m back to two registered copies.

Possibly a sign of something coming soon?

  55. neoseeker - # April 2nd, 2009 at 11:13 pm

it’s a fuckin sign of the igf being over.

thanks now my ai is twice as stupid, if i were actually playing it :/

  56. jackson - # April 3rd, 2009 at 11:46 am

Cortex Command is dead for all we know. How hard is it to update the devlog every few weeks?

  57. BerkleyJ - # April 3rd, 2009 at 12:18 pm

I’m trying to start any wars here, I’m just asking why he hasn’t posted any news about what he’s been working on in Cortex Command. It’s been 5 months since the last update and surely hes done something worth mentioning to us. Maybe he hasn’t done anything on the game for 5 months and if your okay with that your the one with the problem not me.

  58. BerkleyJ - # April 3rd, 2009 at 12:20 pm

Great, I end saying I’m trying to start a war when I meant to say I’m not trying too. FML.

  59. Derek - # April 3rd, 2009 at 2:39 pm

From experience, it may not seem like a big deal to put out an update, but it is! There are a lot of things developers have to worry about (especially indie developers)… features can take months to implement, and sometimes they don’t work out right. Trust me, it’s much better for Dan and for you if he updates when he’s ready. The last thing anyone wants is for Dan to burn himself out worrying about making posts.

Have faith, Dan is more machine than man.

  60. BerkleyJ - # April 4th, 2009 at 9:42 am

I was talking about posting a progress update on the blog, not a new build (although that would be nice). Thanks for the progress update Data. :-)

  61. Tychoid - # April 7th, 2009 at 1:37 am

Holy @#$% man – Data is a monster! Grab the torches and pitchforks

  62. Jack - # April 10th, 2009 at 11:08 am

Gosh Data you are such a muscle man, it is almost a little scary how beefcake you are.
Also that Graveyard game, wtf, I am going to have to go find out what that is.

  63. Entharion - # April 14th, 2009 at 4:01 am

Good job! though I’d like to see more updates :P

  64. ColeScheffler - # April 30th, 2009 at 7:28 pm

Good job data, you deserved those awards! Looks like you had fun too! :)
