Posted by Data in Cortex Command - December 9th, 2008

After a long wait, Cortex Command for OSX is out. This is a universal binary package, so it should work on most Macs out there (as long as they are running a version of OSX higher or equal to 10.4 (Tiger))! However, we couldn’t test this on all possible combos ourselves, so if you find it doesn’t run on your mac, please send the error message to us at support@datarealms.com.

A big thank you and kudos goes to Chris Kruger who did a fantastic job getting this complex piece of software running on this great platform! Cortex Command is built on half a dozen libraries and middleware components that all had to be made to run in harmony in the Mac environment – on both old PPC and new Intel flavors. It wasn’t a walk in the park.

We need your help to spread the word to game-starved Apple fans everywhere! If you have a friend who uses Mac and haven’t been able to play CC yet, how about getting him/her a copy of the game for the holidays?

Download Test Build 22 for Mac OSX!Unlock Cortex Command!

Finally, note that if you have bought a license for Cortex Command, you can use it to play any version on any platform. In other words, the keys are platform-agnostic.

  22. zalo - # December 9th, 2008 at 9:41 am

Now builds will take twice as long to come out :(
He’ll have to update the mac version after he’s
updated the PC one and then he’ll release it.

Though I’m happy that it finally happened

  23. Paul - # December 9th, 2008 at 10:18 am

    I love you data realms

  24. ZomBuster - # December 9th, 2008 at 10:19 am

Does the Mac version support mods? Just wondering

  25. FinDude - # December 9th, 2008 at 10:32 am

Nope. File structure is way too different.

  26. darklink - # December 9th, 2008 at 10:41 am

Well if it doesn’t support mods, can you at least edit pre-existing weapons/actors in the game?

  27. cado - # December 9th, 2008 at 10:52 am

    THANK YOU

  28. Chamyky - # December 9th, 2008 at 11:17 am

    Plain joy.
    Thanks, thanks, thanks.
    Hmm :3.

  29. Chamyky - # December 9th, 2008 at 11:18 am

Ah, I forgot, the mutlicolor Apple is retro, that’s pleasant :) .

  30. BerkleyJ - # December 9th, 2008 at 12:13 pm

Bah, Now all we can complain about are new builds. I want build 23, I want more campaign levels, and I want more everything. Bah!

  31. Undertech - # December 9th, 2008 at 12:51 pm

Yes! I’m going to go buy a Mac now so I can play this!

  32. Krumbs - # December 9th, 2008 at 1:03 pm

I’ve downloaded it, but now when I click on it it briefly appears in the bar at the bottom (forgotten the name of it :S)
    and then disapears.

    What do I do?

  33. Data - # December 9th, 2008 at 1:05 pm

Zombuster, Findude: Mac version should support mods just fine! Open the app package and put the mod .rte dirs in there as usual.

  34. Chamyky - # December 9th, 2008 at 1:14 pm

Uh, Data, I sent you some mails but it looks like your didn’t receive them. Would have they fallen in your spam box?
(I think you can see my email address in the Log?)

  35. Data - # December 9th, 2008 at 1:25 pm

Cham, I got em – thank you. Have been busy, will try to catch up on all my emails today!

  36. Roon3 - # December 9th, 2008 at 1:26 pm

“Mail (will not be published) (required)”
    I don’t think you can see emails…

Wow this is great. (To bad I don’t have a Mac, darn)
Is all the B23 content in this?

  37. Seraph - # December 9th, 2008 at 2:02 pm

Nice, now I can defile every last mac in the music studios and uni with this blessed gift >:D

  38. Seraph - # December 9th, 2008 at 2:03 pm

Double post, but you’ve really stepped up the updates here Data, it’s awesome.

  39. Chamyky - # December 9th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

@Data : Okay, sorry for the spam then.

@Roon3 : « “Mail (will not be published) (required)”
    I don’t think you can see emails… »

However, Data is the owner of the site.

« Wow this is great. (To bad I don’t have a Mac, darn)
Is all the B23 content in this? »

I saw some changes: the burst-burst-burst to fly very high with jetpack doesn’t seem to work anymore; there are nice arrows on the borders to indicate objectives, and the ground (or the actors?) looks more bouncy.

  40. Roon3 - # December 9th, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Cham, I meant weapon and actor wise, I tor the DMG to bits and was quite disappointed…

  41. Hiro - # December 9th, 2008 at 2:09 pm

    VWAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! PLAYIN NAOW

  42. TFSR - # December 9th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

    Noice.
B23 universal by next weekend, then?

  43. Zel - # December 9th, 2008 at 2:16 pm

    Grate job Data, and Chris!
Now I can finaly play this on something other then my laptop

also. the mac version is perfectly modifiable.
but with how the game was set up, to get to the rte files you need to first right click (control click if you have a one button mouse still) on the game, select “Show Package Contents”, open the contents folder, the open Resources.
inside will be all of the rte files, and yyou can add and removed them the same way you would with the PC version.

it might save you some time later on if you right click the Resources folder, and select “Make Alias”, and place that somewhere you can find easily. that way you have a quick and easy way of getting to the rte files when you want to add or remove them

  44. Chamyky - # December 9th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Well in a future version, CC will maybe search for .rte in its Application Support folder.

  45. -E-S- - # December 9th, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Im in denial… ill get back to you later…

  46. 10050 - # December 9th, 2008 at 2:48 pm

    *applause*

  47. Tomaster - # December 9th, 2008 at 3:07 pm

    @AtomicTroop
I thought that looked like obvious sarcasm. Apparently I was wrong.

  48. Dragonshadow - # December 9th, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Can we use the same key on a windows version and a mac version at the same time? I don’t want to have to un-install CC on my windows box just to play it on my mac.

  49. Data - # December 9th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Dragon: no you can’t use the same key at the same time, but you also don’t have to uninstall the game to free up your key on one machine. You can simply unregister it within the game with one button press or outside with the .bat file shortcuts in windows. Then you can register/use it on the other computer (the game remembers your key even if it is unregistered). This works well if you remember to unregister each time you’re done playing on one computer.

For ultimate convenience though, you’d have to get another key.

  50. Dragonshadow - # December 9th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Oi, I wish I could get keys tied to my IP instead of registered per machine.

  51. Dragonshadow - # December 9th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Sorry for double commenting, but maybe you should offer an IP based key. It would cost a bit more, but you would get it tied to your IP. This might be a bit of a problem with dynamic IPs though -.-

  52. Krumbs - # December 9th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

I downloaded it, but when I click on the icon it only appears in the dock for a second then disappears. What do I do?

  53. Zel - # December 9th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

  81. Snoski - # December 16th, 2008 at 10:28 am

I’m experiencing the same problem as Krumbs who has already three times asked for help here, only to be ignored every time.
I am running PPC eMac OSX 10.3.9 which is supposed to be supported with this release. But on launch of the appilcation the icon will only flash in my toolbar for a second before shutting itself again (no error screens or anything though). I have tried different sources and settings but nothing has helped so far. By helping me you’d be helping Krumbs at the same time so I ask nicely if anyone knows what’s going on.
Thanks (assuming there’ll be any response)

  82. Data - # December 16th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

Snoski, Krumbs: It turns out you need to have at least Tiger (10.4) to run the package… we’ll see if we can make it even more backwards compatible in future builds, but can’t promise anything. Sorry!

  83. Snoski - # December 16th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

Oh, bugger. Well let’s hope for the best in the future!
