Prom found this; it’s like straight out of Cortex Command!
Watch until about a minute into it… hilarity ensues:

AUUUGURGHhh!!” Awesome.

In other news, the next build will be a whopper with much deadlier AI. No more of that “Why isn’t he firing!?” business. After debugging the original AI code, I’m amazed that they managed to hit or even detect anything. Also: shields, awesome mouse control with analog sharp aiming that won’t go though walls, complete control device config, etc etc.

UPDATE: Work in progress shield saving a life – barely:

Shield Save

lol, sooooooo cheasy. Makes you love the special effects of today… and color… and good actors… and good sets… and…

  2. Chetic - # January 27th, 2007 at 2:11 pm

Dude, I hope you’re fixing what makes them run back and forth ABOVE the heart, making them eventually go through the ground and metal, down to the heart.
That little thing makes the whole game so much harder for me, hah. Yeah I’m a noob…

P.S: Thank you for the best way ever to make lame classes pass fast

  3. Maverick - # January 27th, 2007 at 2:32 pm

The new AI sounds like it will be alot more fun and interesting. Has thier ability to “dig” endlessly into the walls of your brain bunker been removed, or hindered? I feel like giving them the ability to shoot and actually fight your units, coupled with thier amazing “digging” ability will make matches short and dissapointing πŸ™

  4. Acehead - # January 27th, 2007 at 2:41 pm

    What was she hitting?!?!?!

  5. Cpowa - # January 27th, 2007 at 2:58 pm

“shields, awesome mouse control with analog sharp aiming that won’t go though walls, complete control device config, etc etc.”
    Very good
    But when?

  6. BreenedandScrooned - # January 27th, 2007 at 3:31 pm

Yes! Sounds like the new build is really coming along. Keep up the good work! And Chetic, it’s not a heart, it’s a brain.

  7. Foogooman - # January 27th, 2007 at 5:15 pm

Wow, the new build sounds amazing! Will the AI actually walk around your base and go inside instead of just walking around on top now, also?

  8. Barbalute - # January 27th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

Will they use the flexibility of the human body, combined with its mobility and dexterity to destroy?

You must be destroyed… Kill her… Kill her… Kill her…

  9. Kokits - # January 27th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

The new build sounds awesome, but any more details on the time it will come out? I know you said under a month, but I’m REALLY anticipating the new build.

  10. Joemikkel - # January 27th, 2007 at 6:43 pm

Now you’ve got me all excited about the next build, dangit.

  11. Giant.Metal.Idiot - # January 27th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

The new features sound sweet! I hope that now the AI will not be able to hump (dig) through my 800000 strength concrete in under a minute!

  12. Lazyfaith - # January 28th, 2007 at 3:26 am

sounds great!! stop them digging in the ground though, its just annoying. Maybe you should add a a telescope view from the mother ship. So like if you press I or 6, depends which player you are, you will be able to look around the battlefield but with no little guy there, and there can eb a black circle which you look through for it.

  13. Inv3rt - # January 28th, 2007 at 8:09 am

Thoes brains are scary… And Finally, Better AI! I hate that “Shooting Robots Only” thing. And cool video, too.

  14. ninepound - # January 28th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

Someone needs to make that β€œAUUUGURGHhh!!” into one of the actor’s death sounds.

  15. Giant.Metal.Idiot - # January 28th, 2007 at 6:50 pm

    Good idea, NinePound!

  16. Omni (Omnimmotus) - # January 29th, 2007 at 4:20 am

Haha, that’s awesome. What’s the timeframe on the next update? I’m dying to try it!

  17. G-Master - # January 29th, 2007 at 2:03 pm

Lol? Kill her! Kill her! Then new build sounds fun. Also, to stop annoying digging being a problem, just make the brain invincible! Then the fact that they dig just means you can use a concrete gun or otherwise to hole up the holes and watch em go! GO MAN GO!

  18. SlightyInsane - # January 29th, 2007 at 5:15 pm

Hey, Sorry about this but will CC run on Windows Vista?

  19. Data - # January 29th, 2007 at 7:03 pm

Insane: I certainly hope so! Don’t see why not, but haven’t tested it yet though.

  20. SlightyInsane - # January 29th, 2007 at 8:00 pm

Alright, Lemme try, I’m ganna boot my dad of his computer.
He has Vista so i’m ganna try.

  21. SlightyInsane - # January 29th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Byah! It does work. Yay for Vista O_o

  22. BreenedandScrooned - # January 29th, 2007 at 11:30 pm

The AUUUGURGHhh!! thing should be the sound the Brain makes when it dies.

  23. Omni (Omnimmotus) - # January 30th, 2007 at 12:39 am

    Haha, good idea breened.

  24. Raziel - # January 30th, 2007 at 12:59 am

Poor brains =( Oh, and don’t they know the right eye is connected to the left part of the brain and the left eye to the right part? >.> Anyway, I CAN wait for the build, just make it as good as possible ^_^

  25. Acidfire - # January 30th, 2007 at 2:36 am

Whaha, that shield is awesome πŸ™‚ I would make it a bit longer though, the real-life shields police use also cover most of the legs πŸ™‚

Can’t wait for the AI upgrade either. πŸ˜€ This is gona be great. Thanks for your great work! πŸ™‚

  26. Omni (Omnimmotus) - # January 30th, 2007 at 4:27 am

Probably better shields cover larger areas. That Doctor Who episode seems a lot different if you think about it from the Cortex Command perspective. Makes me wish the brains had won. πŸ™‚ Lookin good.

  27. Axxel - # January 30th, 2007 at 9:18 am

    That shield looks cool.

  28. BreenedandScrooned - # January 30th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

Yeah, the shield looks awesome, I thought it would be some kind of energy shield thing, but this is much better.

  29. iwillcontrolyou - # January 30th, 2007 at 5:33 pm

uhhh…the shield has an ammo/use count, how’s that gonna work? uses or # of hits it can take?

  30. Hymerman - # January 30th, 2007 at 7:58 pm

Sorry Raziel, you’re wrong. The optic nerves partially cross, but rather than nerves from the left and right eye being separated, nerves relating to the left and right portions of the visual field are separated. What’s weird is that that’s one of the few things I’ve learned on a Computer Science degree course, and it’s nothing to do with computers.

Anyways, the shield looks nice, though I’m hoping it’ll be controlled by a ‘shield button’ rather than switching to it in the same way you do with weapons. Keep up the excellent work, chaps, this is fast becoming my favourite indie project πŸ™‚

  31. FinDude - # January 31st, 2007 at 12:25 pm

Man, this game is gonna be SO kickass!
    Gotta buy it right away!!!

  32. kokits - # January 31st, 2007 at 5:47 pm

That shield looks AWESOME!! (I say awesome a lot… I’m gonna’ go to Awesome-users anonymous). It cracks me up to see the difference in Data’s spriting and some other user’s.

  33. kokits - # January 31st, 2007 at 5:49 pm

Ok, sorry for the double post, but I just scrolled up and saw this…

If you look closely, the 3 red dots used for aiming, are moving forward and back. Can this be the new mouse function? Aww, man! I want this new build!

  34. Mr. B - # January 31st, 2007 at 6:01 pm

Does this mean the players other actors won’t just stand there and get shot too? My actors have only ever shot at a drop ship aha.

new build looks amazing, is it just me or does the boulder in that little gif you posted up there look more detailed?

    Hooray AI!

  35. Data - # January 31st, 2007 at 8:10 pm

A clarification since some people seem to think that the scene editor would be released in the next build: it will not. It’ll be at least a month of work to get it done right.

The next build will have a lot of of stuff thuogh, most of which has been mentioned. It’s coming along nicely.

  36. Foogooman7 - # January 31st, 2007 at 10:12 pm

Hmm, so that kind of shield? For some reason an energy shield that surrounded the player came to mind.

  37. Data - # January 31st, 2007 at 10:47 pm

How cliche would that have been?! This realistic shield model is sweet imo… not impentrabale or all encompassing, just like in real life.

Still working out how the weilding is going to work. Right now the actors automatically use the shield in the bg hand if they have it and the fg hand uses a one-handed weapon. However, the shield gets ‘undeployed’ while the bg hand is busy reloading the gun, so you’re vulnerable then. Also the shield is automatically pulled up when you hold the inventory key and switch around weapons, regardsless of how many hands they require.

    Again, work in progress.

  38. BreenedandScrooned - # February 1st, 2007 at 12:47 pm

That’s exactly how I thought it would be Foogooman, and I thought it would be really annoying, but it looks good.

  39. Giant.Metal.Idiot - # February 2nd, 2007 at 12:09 am

The Background arm (That is what it is, right?) will finally be used? Sweet! I hope your going to add duel-wielding, Data!

  40. Skibiliano - # February 2nd, 2007 at 4:53 am

    Giant Metal idiot
yea that would be nice, think about dual-wielded smgs shooting dropship engines, sweeet.
How about adding a ship in the ship. i mean

    BIG Dropship
    drops
    5x small droppods to ground.
    They open
    there is popping out shields/weapons/healthkits

Would cortex command be like that in future?

  41. FinDude - # February 2nd, 2007 at 6:19 am

    Think not.

  42. Omni (Omnimmotus) - # February 2nd, 2007 at 10:26 am

Sounds neat. Might be fun to add sometime in the future, but it’s not a highly needed feature.

I’m sure people will make energy shields. Just give it time.

  43. Kokits - # February 2nd, 2007 at 11:27 am

It is a bit dissapointing that the level editor will not be out with it, but as long as it gets done, and it is good, then I’ll be happy.

  44. BreenedandScrooned - # February 2nd, 2007 at 3:32 pm

I think maybe there should be packages you can buy to put the actors in, and when you drop them from a ship they just land and are completeley unharmed.

  45. Danny - # February 2nd, 2007 at 6:15 pm

    nice

  46. Batesman - # February 2nd, 2007 at 9:35 pm

coming along well. can’t wait for the scene editor!!!

  47. sylverone - # February 3rd, 2007 at 11:14 am

Any one bother to watch through the whole movie? XP

Anyway, the music at the end sounds *almost* like it could be in cortex command. Just thought that was funny.

  48. 21GP - # February 4th, 2007 at 11:09 pm

Hey, she totally just rushed the brain.
