Posted by Data in Cortex Command - June 27th, 2008

First Loading on MacChris is doing a great job with the porting, and has made lots of progress. The code now builds and runs on Mac OSX, but there’s still some issues to iron out… (lack of RMB!%@#)

Sorry for the sparse updates lately, but rest assured things are moving along on several fronts: We are almost done building a new licensing system which will make things a lot more easy and flexible for you guys. We just need to integrate it and test it thoroughly before putting it out there. Another front is the mac porting mentioned above.

On the actual game side of Cortex Command, a few big under-the-hood hurdles have been completed. There’s a new memory management system which makes things run faster and more reliably. Also the Lua interface has been improved and made a lot easier to work with. Now you can create new instances of any Entity by simply doing something like this in the console or script file:

myActor = CreateActor("Soldier Light");
myWeapon = CreateHDFirearm("Pistol");
myActor:AddToInventory(myWeapon);
-- This adds the new Actor to the scene, so he actually appears
MovableMan:AddActor(myActor);

streamline streamline streamline! its always good to hear. but what about actual gameplay elements?

  6. roy-g-biv - # June 27th, 2008 at 7:04 pm

    Awesome!
My Computer absolutly sucks! Now I can play almost nonlaggy CC!

Also, I noticed today is a friday.
    Maybe a friday treand?
    Especially since this is summer?

  7. Fooby - # June 27th, 2008 at 7:06 pm

Yes!! Finally an update. I guess I should start learning LUA soon =\

  8. CaveCricket48 - # June 27th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

Allright! I’m glad for the major update. I just looked on the devlog a few seconds, looked at other stuff, came back, and BOOM! Update!

  9. Khyour - # June 27th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

Lol @ MovableMan. The name sounds like it’s for a superhero.

  10. Azukki - # June 27th, 2008 at 7:15 pm

    Roy-G-Biv
Why would summer or fridays make any difference to data?

Also, nice to hear about less lag, and that lua’s going well.

Is there going to be any content additions on this or the next few builds?

  11. Cobalt - # June 27th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

Does that means we can disable the AI, spawn some enemies around and basically make a “level” of some sorts?

If so, give me a cigarette, because I just came.

  12. J23 - # June 27th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

If Cobalt is right, I’m gonna need a cig too.

  13. Data - # June 27th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Cobalt, that’s just the most basic of things you’ll be able to do.

  14. Tomaster - # June 27th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

    Thuper!!!

  15. Tomaster - # June 27th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

    Sthuper!!!

  16. Omnimmotus - # June 27th, 2008 at 10:38 pm

    Do want. :]

  17. Aspect - # June 27th, 2008 at 11:52 pm

    Thanks for the update!

Glad to hear about streamlining, and when you say memory management, does that mean that even if you run like 40 mods it will still take up less memory? That has always been my problem, running a few mods, and pushing the memory usage from around 60,000 K to 150,000 K. Kinda painful on my PC.

  18. Ghost Bear - # June 28th, 2008 at 12:17 am

    lolnice

  19. Seraph - # June 28th, 2008 at 2:09 am

Good to hear an update Data!
Every thing’s sounding peachy – can’t wait for the next build.

  20. Tea - # June 28th, 2008 at 2:18 am

    Thanks Data!
Glad to know how things are going along.

  21. zacness - # June 28th, 2008 at 2:31 am

    Sweet.
How is development of the actual game/ gameplay going?

  22. Lazyfaith - # June 28th, 2008 at 3:35 am

    yay, mac…

When is the next build going to be out?
And what will the tutorials for the lua be on? Will it be on learning the code or just how to do things like add an actor?

  23. trolleydude - # June 28th, 2008 at 4:52 am

I love the sound of that memory management.

  24. war_man333 - # June 28th, 2008 at 4:52 am

The coding looks incredible simple, thanks for some easy hooks .
    Glad it’s not MyCharacterActorDudeGuy-Do;3;rt43o5k4mo36m+34j

So yeah, keep up the epic work.

  25. xtortion1980 - # June 28th, 2008 at 5:29 am

    any ETA for next build?
also does Lua mean multiple fire modes for weapons?

  26. Shook - # June 28th, 2008 at 5:38 am

    Niiiiiice.
One thing though, that memory leak that tends to occur when you’ve
attached an emitter to a weapon (”Preferrably” high rate of emission),
has it been fixed? Some of my better ideas have been impeded by this :|

  27. Kallemort - # June 28th, 2008 at 5:45 am

Ok now I am officially hyped. For Diablo 3.

Oh god my hands are trembling. ,_,
    CANT WAIT.

  28. brinlarden - # June 28th, 2008 at 5:52 am

awesome news man. can’t wait. i can tell its still a while off then? atleast i dont have to think it could come anytime.

  29. Tobeh - # June 28th, 2008 at 6:31 am

    Whoop, less borkage!

  30. TFSR - # June 28th, 2008 at 8:17 am

    Data- No comment too awesome.
Also, Xtortion- alt-fire is possible by having a keypress change gun X into gun Y if gun X is in actor’s hands, or so I believe.

  31. XDevil - # June 28th, 2008 at 10:24 am

    huh Mac… :X ^^

Alright, not to be mean or anything, but I’m taking bets on what # the first flame post will be. Anyone?

  35. Roy-g-biv - # June 28th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

@SIRKOOPA : NO, NO, Just STop it!!!!

    #34

  36. Octyl - # June 28th, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Tomaster: Your freaking retarded with taking bets about a flame post. Get a life.

    Loljk.

Awesome update, can’t wait for B21.

  37. Tomaster - # June 28th, 2008 at 1:36 pm

    lol, Roy-G-Biv won

  38. brinlarden - # June 28th, 2008 at 2:51 pm

why has my comment gone :O
i wonder how much of an improvment in lag the ‘memory management system’ will have.

  39. trolleydude - # June 28th, 2008 at 2:54 pm

Also, is it too much hassle to bind the different AI modes to the face buttons on the controller? Because at the moment they just sit there.

Also I reckon navigating through menus should be done with the A button, not the right trigger. I realise not everyone uses a 360 controller, but I’d be grateful if it was polished up a bit.

  40. Kallemort - # June 28th, 2008 at 2:55 pm

We can hope its huge, but the un-optimized b13 ran better for me than b20 nowadays.

  41. Icchan^ - # June 28th, 2008 at 6:33 pm

I wan’t more improvements before I think the game has enough for a pricetag:
Hardware acceleration for the graphics (I know the physics could benefit from one too. More different graphic modes supportedAnd I hope this has dual or quad core support allready for the physics? A Better way to handle the ladders (too often my actors freeze in the middle for no apparent reason). Possibility to add stuff to your bunker (repair and expand) in the middle of the fight.

Too much to list in here but I hope we see those soon. And good work guys so far.

  42. roy-g-biv - # June 28th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

@Icchan: We have the forums for putting your ideas in.

  43. leadpumper - # June 28th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

    Sweet.

  44. war_man333 - # June 29th, 2008 at 2:22 am

Hay can we have daily news now?
Can we get to know what sandwich you ate and how much toothpaste you used?
    Please?
    :3

  45. Tea - # June 29th, 2008 at 2:30 am

    War_man, That’s just creepy.

  46. zacness - # June 29th, 2008 at 5:02 am

    I had a toothpaste sandwich.

  47. roy-g-biv - # June 29th, 2008 at 7:08 am

    @Zachness: What the heck.
    That must’ve been nasty.

Also, anyone up to making a wikipedia page for data?

  48. Fyher - # June 29th, 2008 at 8:47 am

It looks like in the pic he put up that hes loaded cortex command and a mod as well. Does this mean that the port is done. What kind of little issues need to be fixed and also, is that build 21 your loading into the mac?:P

  49. roy-g-biv - # June 29th, 2008 at 9:06 am

@Fisher : That’s B20. He’s just loading promgrounds. And I see no Lua file mentioned in the screenshot.

  50. Octyl - # June 29th, 2008 at 10:12 am

Just a question Data: Is B21 only going to be gameplay/engine improvements (streamlining, Lua etc.) Or are there going to be any new Campaign missions, or races/factions?

  51. Tea - # June 29th, 2008 at 10:48 am

    What he said.

  52. Daman - # June 29th, 2008 at 11:16 am

@50, I doubt it. I don’t think he would only do this much in ~4 weeks. I bet there’s been a lot of work going into making the campaign, he’s just keeping it hidden for one major update.

  53. Tobeh - # June 29th, 2008 at 1:05 pm

Data could be eating a sandwich right now AND I WOULD NOT KNOW ABOUT IT D:> aaaaaaaargh!1!11

  54. roy-g-biv - # June 29th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

    @ Toby: No, that is sick. R U A STALK3R?

Also, I would assume Data would at least give us 1 or 2 new actors, with Lua.

  55. brinlarden - # June 29th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

    what octyl said.

  56. roy-g-biv - # June 29th, 2008 at 5:48 pm

I’m adding to what I said last post.

    and Sticky Particles?

Also, The most coolest NON Lua related Devlog entry is the sticky particles.

  57. ARTINKDARK - # June 29th, 2008 at 6:24 pm

OMG OMG OMG!!! FINALLY MAC PROGRESS!!! HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FREAKIN AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

  58. PlasmaNova - # June 29th, 2008 at 7:10 pm

    sounds like kick ass
    wait a minute…
every update is kick ass XD

  59. sircooper45 - # June 29th, 2008 at 9:02 pm

    yaay

  60. zalo - # June 29th, 2008 at 10:32 pm

I’m gone for TWO DAYS of the entire time after you made your last post, and it just happens to happen when I’m gone.

I’m looking forward to the memory management, and other optimizations (Dual-Core(Please)).

  61. Icchan^ - # June 30th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

I don’t think a campaign missions or new actors are the thing this game needs. It needs an engine that really works. And has rules that make the game really fun to play. At this stage it still has a way to make things go wrong in the wrong time and make you to frustrate to the game itself.

  62. Foa - # June 30th, 2008 at 3:07 pm

What, like shooting down ship, and you don’t realize that your in the cone of gibs?
Brain wrestling with a Dreadnought and your head pops of.
YOU MISPLACE THE YPSILON BEACON AND GET TOTALLY RAPED BY THE LASER BEAM?
Evil Poni’s Undead mod’s glitch, rape your defense turrets, though the zombies a half in-game mils away!

  63. -E-S- - # June 30th, 2008 at 6:39 pm

    Woot! progress : D

This rules! I hope it runs good on my comp. hope it gets released soon!

  64. Tea - # July 1st, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Foa, what are you talking about?

  65. The Advisor - # July 1st, 2008 at 5:34 pm

    This looks extreme!

Now all it needs is to have a full campaign by the looks of it, and I will be on this like a bee to honey… again.

  66. zacness - # July 2nd, 2008 at 1:45 am

Aren’t all your questions on this board pointless?

How many did Data actually answer on the last log?

  67. bbr - # July 2nd, 2008 at 6:54 am

    Looking forward to trying this.

  68. bbr - # July 2nd, 2008 at 6:56 am

By the way, MAC supports RMB mouses just fine. (using a logitech mouse here with no problems)
It’s basically just a left click with the control key down though.

  69. Jack73hRipper - # July 2nd, 2008 at 11:20 am

omg no one cares about the Mac port

    BRING ME BUILD 21 WTFPLZ

  70. Tea - # July 2nd, 2008 at 11:58 am

    Zacness: Like three or five.
    66: Shut up.

  71. koopatroopa - # July 2nd, 2008 at 2:01 pm

I’m so amped about the mac version. I will def be one of the first buying the mac build

  72. TFSR - # July 3rd, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Happy 4th of July from the suburb of New York known to most as New Jersey.
Here’s hoping for Build 21 by July 21.

  73. TFSR - # July 3rd, 2008 at 10:46 pm

    And yes, it was 12:45 07/04/08 (hh:mm MM/DD/YY) when I posted that.

  74. kiwi - # July 3rd, 2008 at 11:12 pm

12:10 here, happy 4th of july

also fire works are baned here cause of the burn ban :(

  75. Octyl - # July 4th, 2008 at 9:29 am

In my city the Canada day fireworks we’re cancelled because of MASSIVE flooding. MASSIVE.

  76. kiwi - # July 4th, 2008 at 9:15 pm

wow no fire works cause flooding, thats new

  77. Octyl - # July 5th, 2008 at 10:40 am

It was also still raining hard.

  78. DJchocobo - # July 6th, 2008 at 1:33 am

Holy $h!+!!!!!!! This is GREAT! I can’t wait! Kudos for you Data. Have a pie.

@ Octyl– Well I hope everyone is ok.

“lack of RMB!%@#”, every modern Mac has a right mouse button? Whats the problem?

  81. Jam - # July 6th, 2008 at 11:18 am

Looking forward to paying for this :)

  82. kiwi - # July 6th, 2008 at 9:01 pm

is the three week space between updates gonna happen again?

  83. Tomaster - # July 6th, 2008 at 9:03 pm

Cool, I was thinking that I would miss a major update. Now I’m back. Oh, shit, I have to be gone for a week in a bit, Data, don’t update it until two weeks from now, kay?

  84. Stromko - # July 7th, 2008 at 4:52 am

More stable scripting sounds good, half the mods I get off the boards will crash within minutes, and the other half will crash me in about 30 minutes.. and the base game crashes in about an hour. So I’m happy to hear about more stability; though I’m strangely excited about the sticky concrete too.

  85. Octyl - # July 7th, 2008 at 10:37 am

GRRRR. He’ll update when he does, i’m leaving for a while to go see my cousins, i won’t have much computer access. I’d almost be happy for him to update then, almost especially if it’s B21, because then i get back…. Wait, what the hell am i saying? I hope i’m here for B21.

  86. kiwi - # July 8th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

will this be updated this Thursday or next? just wondering.

  87. Zel - # July 8th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

It could be any day of any week of any month. It’s done when it’s done.

  88. Aspect - # July 9th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Cortex is mentioned again on Indiegames blog.
I could really use an update around now.

  89. Hobbesy (Lambda) - # July 9th, 2008 at 9:02 pm

Aww come here Data you big lug so we can all give you a group hug. :3

  90. Hiro - # July 9th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

    Oh…
I just realized that the pic for this devlog post is CC starting up on a mac…

    yay.

  91. carpet_ninja - # July 10th, 2008 at 12:27 am

hope fully well get an updaate today

  92. Hiro - # July 10th, 2008 at 9:28 am

And hopefully we get world peace.

Oh, and teleportation. That would be nice too.

  93. carpet_ninja - # July 10th, 2008 at 10:28 am

    that would be nice

  94. Tobeh - # July 10th, 2008 at 12:25 pm

    Hiro can already teleport 0_o

  95. Siric - # July 10th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

Are there going to be LAN and Internet servers in B21?

  96. -E-S- - # July 10th, 2008 at 3:46 pm

If this gets released this month than data deserves a shower of cookies.

  97. Hellfire999 - # July 10th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

    I’m guessing a Sep-Feb release TBH

  98. XDevil - # July 11th, 2008 at 11:20 am

    Damn Mac -_-
    Build more Gamestructur!
    *brb

  99. Hiro - # July 12th, 2008 at 10:03 am

You realize that it’s completely pointless to say brb in a post…
    And don’t envy the Mac.

  100. TFSR - # July 12th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

You do know that Data isn’t even the one doing the porting? He has that ex-Rockstar guy.
All that a mac release does is add a few more customers, getting Data money, letting him keep on working.
Data, do you have any advertising plans?

  101. The Turbinator - # July 13th, 2008 at 5:20 pm

    GIANT FLYING PANDAS!!!! :-D

  102. tumbleweedius - # July 13th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

    Linux port plox

  103. Tobeh - # July 14th, 2008 at 3:38 am

Interwebs games would be awesome in CC :O

  104. XDevil - # July 14th, 2008 at 7:11 am

    Mac is shit!
    :X
    P.S.
    4 Hiro *brb

  105. Trolleydude - # July 14th, 2008 at 8:06 am

So when are we going to hear more from the whitebots?

  106. Hiro - # July 14th, 2008 at 9:59 am

    No it isn’t XDevil.
I can guarantee you it’s ten times better than whatever system you’re using. Just face it, Mac is the ideal OS.

But then again, you’re not exactly intelligent, so you couldn’t understand.

  107. Octyl - # July 14th, 2008 at 10:37 am

I’m not going to start PC/Mac war here, but the only thing wrong I’ve seen with PC’s, is the user. Viruses are the users fault. Almost anything bad that happens to you computer is your fault.

  108. Fyher - # July 14th, 2008 at 11:02 am

Why is prom grounds in an other rte, why isn’t it in base.rte. and also, what does HDFirearm mean and why are crabs so darn clumsy?

  109. Control - # July 14th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

    @107

HDFirearm probably means Held Device Firearm.

  110. Aspect - # July 14th, 2008 at 8:41 pm

    @107

Crabs are probably clumsy because they are ACrabs.

  111. Sheezy - # July 15th, 2008 at 2:15 am

    HEY HIRO, WHAT ABOUT LINUX?

  112. Fyher - # July 15th, 2008 at 6:45 am

does anyone know if cc runs on linux or do ppl gotta download something special to run it?

  113. Sheezy - # July 15th, 2008 at 10:46 am

Havnt tried, it may run on Wine.
I’ve dual booted ubuntu with windows and I have CC on windows so thats what I play it on.

  114. Data - # July 15th, 2008 at 11:24 am

Linux port might happen soon too

  115. Alex - # July 15th, 2008 at 11:48 am

    I’m hungry for some carnage

  116. Octyl - # July 15th, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Data’s back! Hoorah! So are you able to tell us if their are new factions or anything?

  117. robolee - # July 15th, 2008 at 1:05 pm

nah, he only posted to say that a linux port might happen.

  118. Tea - # July 15th, 2008 at 1:32 pm

Data, do you have any plans to implement rumble in the finished game?

For things like when your current actor collides with something or when using a digger.

I have a joypad with rumble and I think it would be awesome!

  119. Hiro - # July 15th, 2008 at 10:31 pm

XDevil, I think I speak for a lot of people when I say every post you make sounds like a six year old typed it. You’re not very smart, are you? Some kind of mental deficiency perhaps? It’s alright, little guy. You can’t get banned just for being stupid. Don’t cry.

    @ Octyl:

If getting sick in real life is a person’s fault, does that make being immune to all sicknesses less of a good thing?
Nope. That’s why never getting viruses is still a good thing, whether you think so or not.

  120. Octyl - # July 16th, 2008 at 11:43 am

True Hiro, but Macs just don’t have many viruses because not enough people use them for a virus maker to target.

  121. Tea - # July 16th, 2008 at 12:39 pm

But that also means that there is less software for it.

  122. Bremze - # July 16th, 2008 at 1:49 pm

Macs are like hookers, they might look prety on the outside(not always) but are guaranteed to suck.

  124. Fyher - # July 16th, 2008 at 2:50 pm

I wonder if data mods for cortex command. If so what mods has he made. Would they be super epic since it’s data and her made the game or would they be like regular mods?

  125. kiwi - # July 16th, 2008 at 7:21 pm

    wow

  126. robolee - # July 16th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

fyher I don’t think it’s possible for a developer to make a mod for their own game, wouldn’t it be an expansion?

seriously… they should just pm each other the insults, or if they are feeling public, start a thread in the forum! That would be a stupid thread.

    Update soon!

  130. geti - # July 17th, 2008 at 12:00 am

wouldnt it be possible to just release the mac build now and make users either use the new mac mouse, some other usb mouse or hold ctrl? as any other mechanic for the options menu is going to take some more getting used to, for no reason.
if it builds, release it XD fix bugs later.

  131. carpet_ninja - # July 17th, 2008 at 12:49 am

does data go on the forums anymore

@ Trolleydude: Why the fuck are you trying to revive a flamewar?

@ XDevil: Sorry man, didn’t mean to make you cry…that hard. It’s okay, little dude. Try to lay off the baby formula for a while.

  138. TFSR - # July 17th, 2008 at 12:29 pm

Looking up at the last 50 posts or so I see a potent argument for Data never, ever making a game with online capability, quite apart from the programming issues.

  139. Hiro - # July 17th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

I actually would still love CC multiplayer, even with the occasional retard like XDevil.

  140. An7hraX - # July 17th, 2008 at 5:45 pm

I still want CC Mutiplayer :D
    And a mac computer xD

  141. Fyher - # July 17th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

You don’t actually need to go buy a mac if you want one. Newer OS’s will work on pc’s since theyre made with intel stuff now. Also, why get a mac if cc runs perfectly fine on a pc? ‘Nother question, will coding be made differently for mac’s since it’s a different os? like will there be different files than .ini’s for them?

  142. Octyl - # July 18th, 2008 at 9:50 am

Macs are good for art etc, pcs aren’t as good. he probably wants one for the art.

“Posted by Data in Cortex Command – August 3rd, 2007

As Linus Torvalds used to say:

“Release early. Release often. And listen to your customers.””

Mostly pointing towards the release often-part here. :D

Hope it wont take much longer. Since I joined the forum, I have the urge to scream for an update. :|

data… we all know what your up to. so please atleast give us a hint or tell us when it’s gonna happen. PLEASE DATA WE ARE GONNA DIE!!! all your fans are going to loose interest and leave with very little amount of people buying your products therefor no money to pay your employes then you will be out of buisness and go back to the gas station for 9 bucks an hour, all because you did’nt let us know and everyone will be sad..

  210. Octyl - # July 28th, 2008 at 9:36 am

    1: He doesn’t HAVE employees.
2: We’ve waited this long, we can wait a couple days/weeks (please let it be days)
3: He gave a release date on an older build, but was unable to meet it. There was a HUGE uproar. I think is good with just hinting.

    ” (lack of RMB!%@#) ”

Ahum, Mac does have a right mouse function, it’s just not on the mouse. It’s something like alt + mouse click or something.

  224. EEE - # August 29th, 2008 at 11:51 pm

No RMB in os X? Are you fucking serious? mighty mouse has RMB

  225. EEE - # August 29th, 2008 at 11:53 pm

    REQUIRED IRON,
it IS ON THE MOUSE. you may need to turn rmb in system preferences (mighty mouse only), but also you may use ANY mouse you want without problems.

  226. Chamyky - # September 6th, 2008 at 7:27 am

Well, I’m a bit late here but Mac OS supports right mouse button since only… 1984.
Apple never shipped two-buttons mice because of the confusing effect it had for newcomers (the “right or left?” problem is pretty frequent, really). That’s why people think that Mac OS don’t support two-buttons mice. And, recently Apple started selling two-buttons mice because they’re now able to design two buttons that look like only one (so it isn’t confusing for users).
There are so much myths on the Mac…

  227. pdavda - # October 4th, 2008 at 2:26 am

The right click is (on mac) apple key and click
