Posted by Data in Cortex Command - August 25th, 2009

wipbotProm and I have now been working together in real life and in person on Cortex Command for over two weeks. Needless to say, there is a LOT of progress in general, and specifically on nailing down how the campaign is going to work. The next few days weeks we are going to post some of the very cool new stuff that is coming up..

    Yay another devlog post

  11. Lucax - # August 25th, 2009 at 12:29 pm

Awesome! But please don’t forget AI, it’s quite clumsy at the moment. Also, consider improving the overall performance of the game.

But I guess you will do some great work together :D

  12. Cupcake - # August 25th, 2009 at 1:05 pm

A new build sounds like an extreme idea! Support from the Cupcake! :)

  13. FinDude - # August 25th, 2009 at 1:21 pm

The few next days as in months!

I had to, I am really looking forward to what shows up.

  14. Smithno13 - # August 25th, 2009 at 2:02 pm

Wow, thats great news. Hope we see some new content soon.
Any word on that banjo kablooie mod? xD

  15. Annihilator Beta - # August 25th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Cool beans. Maybe I’ll finally buy it when I get my things working.

  16. Lazermaniac - # August 25th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

I agree with Lucax. The AI needs some improvement (what the heck happened to gold mining mode, it used to work fine if I recall). Can’t wait for the new content!

  17. gtaiiilc - # August 25th, 2009 at 3:39 pm

sweet glad you two finaly got to meet in person and get to work on Cortex Command a ton!

  18. ToonyMan - # August 25th, 2009 at 4:10 pm

    Yah. An update. :D

  19. Azukki - # August 25th, 2009 at 4:32 pm

Great to hear that things are moving along.
More content sounds great, but extra functionality and general gameplay fixes would be better.

  20. Tomaster - # August 25th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Excellent. I agree with everyone who says they want bug fixes and AI improvements. I think that you can’t really add additionally content if you don’t have the basics down first.

  21. Will - # August 25th, 2009 at 4:55 pm

I hope “in the next few days” means what it says on the tin!

  22. Caiohm - # August 25th, 2009 at 4:59 pm

cant wait to see how the metagame turns out, as well as some more nommy promster art. good to hear progress is being made.
out of interest, how long will you two be in the same place for?

Engine Optimization! Down with lag so we can enjoy every bit of this new campaign work!

  29. swaan - # August 26th, 2009 at 1:55 am

Thats some hype maintenance alright :D

  30. alex - # August 26th, 2009 at 2:11 am

I love how geeky you all are with the updates. He says two words and you all cream your pants like adolescents with hanna montana, its hilarious. Wait it out, I only come in here once a month and never expect to find anything. He could be more like the guy from Dwarf Fortress and actually post a devlog or something but meh, I don´t mind.

  31. LowestFormOfWit - # August 26th, 2009 at 4:26 am

That new picture looks great from what I can read off it. Could we get a slightly higher resolution so we can see the detail text? :D

  32. Har - # August 26th, 2009 at 4:40 am

OH MY GOD HOLY SHIT WHAT THE UPDATE!?

  33. SunnyKatt - # August 26th, 2009 at 5:42 am

Looks sweet! I’m hoping there are buyable upgrades in stuff, to make it more addicting. :D

  34. Tobeh - # August 26th, 2009 at 5:55 am

Hoorah! But I hope I never have to use the spade like that guy :0

  35. Blank - # August 26th, 2009 at 7:29 am

Well, well, well worth the wait.

  36. iKP - # August 26th, 2009 at 8:12 am

DUDE! An UPDATE! Finally! Anyways! My lord Data. Please update ALOT more frequently! I’ve been staring at this log everyday, and suddenly, it seems that The Lord has answered my cries! All HAIL DATA AND PROM! (I’m going all crazy bout a new post? Sheesh)

  37. Generalidea - # August 26th, 2009 at 8:18 am

:) I agree w/ the comment on AI, I can’t keep my sniper sentries from leaning off ledges and crushing themselves into the ground. Perhaps a ‘is sniper’ variable that makes them more aware of their place in the ranks (and thus makes them shuffle around less) is in order

Lovin’ the hell out of CC though :D playing it every chance I get!

  38. war_man333 - # August 26th, 2009 at 8:20 am

    omggggggggggg metal gearrrrrrr
I’m happy to hear that, that sounds AWESOME.

  39. Pink Panther - # August 26th, 2009 at 9:10 am

Don’t tell us too much we might expect it all the time then

  40. Apnea - # August 26th, 2009 at 9:18 am

Great news, of course, but seriously Data you’re being quite the stingy one regarding devlog updates.

I’m starting to question the level of professionalism behind the scene of Data Realms Co. Some news once per month would be a bare minimum, as I see it.

Keep us in the loop a bit more, for all the money we’re heaping on you.

    /put on fire suit

  41. 1nfernal - # August 26th, 2009 at 10:01 am

I agree with APNEA fully since I bought the damn support edition. Put mah moneyz to good use

Also: OMG a real working campaign coming! Also good to see some progress in general

  42. Krumbs - # August 26th, 2009 at 10:10 am

Oh jeez I look forward to the next build, maybe there will be new backgrounds and dirt, like desert or snow!

    Man that’d be good.

  43. Dr. Marcus - # August 26th, 2009 at 10:28 am

This is wonderful news! I recommend this game to all my patients.

Nice! Been looking forward to an update for very long now =)

  47. Cody Ze Coder - # August 26th, 2009 at 2:11 pm

Cool Next build will be awesome And while I don’t know if its possible Can you make an ingame option for TDExplosives like ExplosiveArmSec = 300(example) that would allow the game to arm a projectile/explosive to gib when it hits AFTER that time not before (could make explosives a lot more real)

  48. Geti - # August 26th, 2009 at 2:33 pm

    whoa, new image. looks kickawesome.
now i really cant wait for the new build.

  49. Fooby - # August 26th, 2009 at 3:47 pm

    I came.
    I saw.
I came… I need some tissues, someone get some for me, this is just wrong. Getting up, GAH IT’LL GET EVERYWHERE D:

  50. Me - # August 26th, 2009 at 4:52 pm

I cant really see it properly, but it still looks awesome :P

  51. Timebandit - # August 26th, 2009 at 4:59 pm

    Yeah, I just came.

  52. whitty - # August 26th, 2009 at 5:01 pm

awww dammit my stupid adolescent mind made me jizz all over my hannah montana poster

  53. Raintail - # August 26th, 2009 at 6:27 pm

    YAY :D

I think the worst thing by far is retared AI. I’m sorry, but would a normal…functional being crawl out of his cover to shoot the enemy? And do the leap of structures?

    AND

A feature that lets the clone shoot at people in range judging by the sharprange of the gun whole be a nice add-on. As in, clones use sniper rifles not only when enemies are really close.

  54. Bluedrake42 - # August 26th, 2009 at 8:42 pm

Hey, I didn’t find a suggestions section to the forums and was wondering where I could put my feedback from playing the WIP versions of the game. I just want to air a few suggestions and ideas I have, I understand I’m not a developer, but I still really think these ideas would make sense. And some are more questions of what will be in the end package of the game.

    They would be things like

Being able to shoot and walk past/through team-mates.
Making discarded ammo clips/shells not to pile up as much.
Will water particulates/pixels behave more like water?

    and other stuff.
just wondering where I should discuss it

  55. Angry Welshman - # August 26th, 2009 at 9:14 pm

Simply a fanastic game, I eagerly await the next installment. A few gamepads, some beer, and a big screen monitor have made for many fun nights in the dorm with Cortext Command and my friends.

Have to echo as a long time fan, that AI needs to be more functional before it’s finally done (most noticable with units on sentry not firing upon advancing enemies) but i’m not going to gripe. Keep up the good work.

  56. ramonimbao - # August 26th, 2009 at 11:05 pm

    Moar Browncoats weapons plz.
    Whitebots plz.

    :D

  57. Azukki - # August 26th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

I see GUI blips on the moon.
    This further suggests lunar missions.
    Huzzah!

  58. Ollieh - # August 26th, 2009 at 11:31 pm

That picture reminds me a lot of the good old Star Control II, just a lot more to do!

  59. Exalion - # August 27th, 2009 at 2:37 am

I’d prefer work on the game’s engine.

There is no excuse for a 2D side-scrolling game to use more processing power than a 3D game engine. And there never will be.

  60. Agent Baron - # August 27th, 2009 at 2:49 am

Don’t forget that the machine is also keeping track of every pixel on the screen and updating itself constantly. That in itself takes a lot of processing power. You’ve gotta take the good with the bad.

Besides, Cortex Command doesn’t need an excuse. It’s just that awesome. :D

  61. Random - # August 27th, 2009 at 2:50 am

Totally agree with Exalion. Really needs some optimization, comon’ seriously i bet everyone here would rather have a playable frame rate than campaign and content updates..

  62. BioBen - # August 27th, 2009 at 3:00 am

    3D games engines don’t use full physics…

  63. Geti - # August 27th, 2009 at 3:13 am

to be honest, im really exited for the campaign, and more smexy promster art. for me, there isnt really a “wound prefer” going on, but optimisations would be nice as well. keep in mind that B23 was quite a lot faster than previous builds, so i expect B24 will have more optimisations along with more content.

  64. Exalion - # August 27th, 2009 at 5:03 am

    I hope you’re right, Geti.

There’s also still an issue where if Cortex Command crashes it leaves it’s process running.

Yes, B23 was faster. In the same way as a millipede is faster than a snail.
    It’s still bloody slow.

  65. whitty - # August 27th, 2009 at 7:14 am

CC would stop lagging if it had GPU and multi-core CPU utilization.

  66. Pyris - # August 27th, 2009 at 8:21 am

I am so glad that I bought at B23. Once B24 comes out I foresee a decrease in the discount…

  67. John Sanders - # August 27th, 2009 at 9:24 am

I think the main problem right now is CPU usage, the game manages to crash my box from overheating I have to play the demo with the computer open and using a big fan directed at it.

No other game gives me such headaches.

Improving the CPU now will liberate resources that can be put to better AI later.

In my case I won’t buy the game until performance is seriously improved on AMD computers, I have an Athlon 64 x2 5200+ 4GB plus a Radeon 4850, the game is unplayable unless I set the res to 640×480, after playing it for 5 mins it starts to slowdown and lag like mad, even the music deteriorates each passing minute.

Come on I understand there is some heavy calculation going on, but please there should be a balance between what’s possible to do with a reasonable computer and the gameplay.

I’m sure you guys can optimize the code much more than it is now.

  68. Tomaster - # August 27th, 2009 at 2:22 pm

    @Exalion
How many 3D games account for every pixel on the map?

  69. Geti - # August 27th, 2009 at 2:38 pm

@John: see my “how to make cortex command lag less” topic on the forums. it should fix your problem, at least to the point of not overheating your CPU.
also, your CPU is pretty crappy, and your GPU doesnt matter for CC performance at all. for the record, i have the same GPU as you, and a phenom II 720 BE, and my performance is actually pretty good, which for CC is remarkable. so its not an amd problem so much as a your cpu problem.

also, @ whitty, somehow i dont see multithreading coming just out of the blue, but heck, i might be wrong. or i might not.
just general code optimisations, like maybe prioritisation of physics calculation (not physicalising terrain that isnt near a MO, or at least some other LOD for unused terrain would be good.) or just normal optimisation (do less calculations to get the same result) would be good. if CC keeps speeding up even at a simmilar pace to what it is “currently” moving at (from b20 to b23) i’ll be happy.

basically, just as long as all the new features dont _add_ lag.

  70. spacecoyote - # August 27th, 2009 at 3:16 pm

It runs fast enough on my box, then again I have a 3ghz Phenom 2 Quad.

Keep up the good work guys, I like the gameplay just the way it is. Lack of missions is the only thing, which apparently you guys are working on right now so yeah.

  71. paintfreak - # August 27th, 2009 at 5:14 pm

i have a core i7 920 at 3.8 the game still lags if enough shit is happening……. awsome cant wait for the next build keep it up guys ;-)

  72. LowestFormOfWit - # August 27th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

@Geti: I hope you’re right and definitely hope we don’t make “add features” basically read as “add lag”.

I’m happy with the campaign focus, but there’s so much more you can do, or at least open options for us as modders to do, for the game.

  73. John Sanders - # August 27th, 2009 at 9:21 pm

    GETI,

I know the GPU doesn’t have much to do with the lack of performance of the game, just said what I have in order to make a point.

Yes my CPU is crappy, so can you explain why while on the menu screen the CPU it is always 50%?

Also I did some digging in the forums, the only thing that helps is to change the CPU affinity for the game process and disable one of the cores

Never seen any other game do this before… ever

  74. BloodyHell - # August 28th, 2009 at 3:03 am

Just wanted to say that this game seems to be coming along very nicely and I’m really looking forward to newer Builds.

One thing we all shoule keep in mind is that this is not the final version yet, and I guess (and hope) that optimization will be done until the final release.

Feature-Wise I think this game is missing some things like an option to turn on / off friendly fire (friendly AIs are just too dumb and will shoot you in the back) and adjustable font size (or at least a readable font and no 4px font).

The gameplay itself is damn much fun and the gibbing system just roxx, but as the performance goes down as the maps and the action on them increase perhaps more efficient coding could help to counter constant lags (not wanting to say that coding is inefficient, but there for sure is room for improvement).

Of course that might also delay further releases, as Shaders, GPU assisted stuff and the like would also complicate a lot of things, but things like that are up to the developers and I trust in them making the right choices.

Just wanting to say, please keep up the great work you are doing in creating an enjoyable game.

  75. Dragon239 - # August 28th, 2009 at 7:35 pm

Will this be some sort of “all factions fighting for planet and take turns to buy units/fortify territories/stuff in turn-form and then can fight over places in real time and if you win you take that area with events happening” sort of thing?
Also, that campaign2.gif is nice, but I can’t tell what the hell is going on, but I got that idea right there from it. Was I right? If so this would make campaign so much more epic than it is now, and would get the game major bonus points in my book.
Make sure you don’t make it too easy, please :D

  76. purple100 - # August 28th, 2009 at 8:49 pm

    @John, GETI, et. al.

I have a Core 2 Duo E8400, factory-clocked at 3.00 GHz. Cortex Command runs at 1366×768 fullscreen (native resolution for my monitor). When playing, it maxes out one of the two cores and still runs between 30 and 60 FPS. If you have a great CPU but you have performance problems, you should completely uninstall and then reinstall Cortex.

  77. Geti - # August 28th, 2009 at 10:05 pm

vv HOW TO MAKE CORTEX COMMAND LAG LESS vv
    http://datarealms.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14593

enjoy. also, the wierdness could be old drivers.

@LFOW: hell no, if performance goes down i’d expect outrage on the internets lol.
a proper metagame is going to be really nice though.

  78. whitty - # August 29th, 2009 at 7:24 am

    @76:
try to OC at 3.75 ;)

  79. robolee - # August 29th, 2009 at 10:19 am

Data to stop all these guys whining about GPU and higher res using more resources you could contemplate changing to OpenGL/AllegroGL, I know it would take a huge load of work to change but you can then use the GPU… changing it this late into development would be a major pain in he arse though.

  80. Rookie_one - # August 29th, 2009 at 1:04 pm

    OH yes, an update!
I bought the game because I tried B23 and it felt much more like a finished product already compared to the obvious WIP-Version I put on my much slower Comp around three years prior (though I distinctly remember having quite some fun back then too).
Please take your time to flesh out the meta game! Maybe throw some research in which leads to usable installations/mobile war gear etc. Or how about an additional resource type based on special locations on the meta map? Airstrikes (see mentioned research) and freely modifiable defense stations may be worth considering as well, or the possibility to… ok, I will stop now. Should be enough to make you guys realize how enthusiastic I am about the game you crafted to be so delightfully destroyable! :-)

  81. Nuverian - # August 29th, 2009 at 1:05 pm

Able to build IN game will be wonderfull feature…

    Keep uP…

  82. Dragon239 - # August 29th, 2009 at 2:58 pm

It’ll be much worse if he waits till later to change it though.

  83. Zhukov - # August 30th, 2009 at 11:27 am

“Over the next few days we are going to post some of the very cool new stuff…”

Next few days? Ha! That’s a good one, that is!

  84. Vorac - # August 30th, 2009 at 3:52 pm

Yeah, I’m wondering what Data’s definition of “the next few days” is when it’s been five days since this post and nothing new is up.

  85. Dragon239 - # August 30th, 2009 at 4:19 pm

Hhh… was that campaign.gif there when he first posted it? I tend to hit ESC when pages load to prevent any large things from loading because of bandwidth. But I don’t think it was.

  86. Azukki - # August 30th, 2009 at 4:32 pm

campaign2.gif wasn’t there at first, but that’s just a teaser thing, you can’t even read it. There has to be more coming.
    But it’s coming in DRL-time.

  87. Geti - # August 30th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

No, it wasnt. It was added a day after the post.
and also, adding GL to the mix wont speed things up because, just in case you haven’t noticed, the majority of lag is coming from calculating physics, not drawing each frame. normal people get at least 120x rendered frames per second in a quiet scene (at 60 sim frames per second), but this plumets when physics is going crazy due to there being no processing power. and i dont think data is going to rewrite the physics to the point where they can be handled by a modern GPU. so, changing to GL would only speed up a few things like larger resolutions, which is hardly what we need.
The game just needs code optimisation, not GL.
and i still think atomgroups should be a vector polygon rather than a collection of pixels. that would probably let us have mo-mo collisions eventually as well.

  88. Hieronumos - # August 31st, 2009 at 9:31 am

It’s been six days, where is the cool new stuff???? I want to see all the progress you guys made.

  89. robolee - # August 31st, 2009 at 12:49 pm

actually any lag that is caused from changing to higher resolution is caused by drawing each frame as it is all done on the CPU

  90. robolee - # August 31st, 2009 at 1:12 pm

I think the collision code is the main bottleneck, too many unnecessary collision checks going on. well I just thought you could do simple bounding box collision checks around MO’s (new ini variables) and also have a new variable for scenes that is highest terrain point where the game doesn’t check for collisions against terrain if you are above that point (because there can’t possibly be terrain collisions if you are above the highest point of terrain right?).

Also the AI waypoints are VERY laggy, probably because the AI can change them on the fly (which is also kind of annoying at times).

  91. Geti - # August 31st, 2009 at 5:32 pm

@Robolee: yes, but as i said thats one of the lowest-ranked causes of lag. i agree with you about the collision bottleneck though, but i think collision should be done with vectors rather than pixels, a bounding box to check weather collisions need to happen could also be good but could also become a bottleneck for larger sprites, though that depends on how the box is done.
if terrain collision was converted to vectors aswell that would probably cut down a lot of overhead aswell, with the terrain vectors recreated each time the terrain was damaged. also, i can think of a problem with the terrain height variable, because if gibs pile up on the “highest point” then you might get some ghosting, which is unacceptable. the ai waypoints should be recalced every 5 seconds or so, probably.

  92. GDIT - # September 1st, 2009 at 7:56 am

what is taking so long a few days is turning into a week bah It should be worth it by the looks of things though :3

  93. endahs - # September 1st, 2009 at 9:32 am

*GASP* An update! judging from the picture (a maddeningly low-res picture) there will be moon missions (?) That would be AMAZING!! All I’m hoping for is new campaign missions and a plot and maybe less idiotic AI. B24 naow plz.

  94. anonymous - # September 1st, 2009 at 1:44 pm

    Hey, this is AWESOME.

  95. Bluedrake42 - # September 1st, 2009 at 9:11 pm

I’ve waited a couple of days and there’s nothing posted =(

  96. Timo - # September 1st, 2009 at 11:36 pm

Its been a week, which equals to roughly about 1 DRL-day.
Just be patient, they might be fixing a few bugs out. I rather have a late working stable build than a build that crashes on you.

  97. Screwevertything - # September 2nd, 2009 at 4:15 am

i think when they say a couple of days they meant a month or two…

  98. darksinner - # September 2nd, 2009 at 9:53 am

lol Data can you define next few days?

  99. Krumbs - # September 2nd, 2009 at 12:40 pm

Nah, a few days means a few weeks. Now if he said wait a few weeks, THEN we would have to wait a month or two.

  100. Blackop2 - # September 2nd, 2009 at 12:48 pm

They Must be using VALVe time.

    If anyone has steam :P

But even without the updates its still awesome. I just wish they could update a little faster…

  101. Duh102 - # September 2nd, 2009 at 2:49 pm

More like three or four months.
Honestly, without the source code none of us can criticize how optimized it is. Code doesn’t become faster by magic, there is a limit to how much performance you can get with the same hardware.
Cortex will always be slow, always. With the advent of faster and better CPUs, it will eventually get faster, kinda like how Doom used to be able to tax computers. Now even my DS can run the damn thing.

  102. whitty - # September 2nd, 2009 at 3:47 pm

    “Time” According to Data:
    minutes = hours
    hours = days
    days = weeks
    weeks = months
    months = year or so

  103. Geti - # September 2nd, 2009 at 4:08 pm

nah, hes delivered some stuff in real time in the past. its just uncommon.
also patience will bring happiness to all of you

  104. Tomaster - # September 2nd, 2009 at 4:38 pm

What Geti said. Delivering stuff on time here is pretty uncommon, though it does happen if you pray reallll hard.

  105. Timo - # September 2nd, 2009 at 6:02 pm

Well, I already pray to Data evrey night before i go to sleep.

  106. KupaFM - # September 3rd, 2009 at 6:41 am

    when i can download this?

  107. Pyris - # September 3rd, 2009 at 7:37 am

Could be worse. I’m still waiting for Noctis V and Duke Nukem If ever. Will you ever complete Lino, Alex?

  108. Hieronumos - # September 3rd, 2009 at 1:09 pm

What a shitty action this is data.

  109. Tomaster - # September 3rd, 2009 at 2:47 pm

Duke Nukem got officially canceled, didn’t it?

  110. Bluedrake42 - # September 3rd, 2009 at 8:04 pm

Yeah it got canceled by 3d realms
but someone else might pick it back up
    don’t know

  111. Fanta - # September 4th, 2009 at 2:17 pm

Umm does it say end turn? does that mean CC will be turn based like you take over areas and your enemy takes over areas until you control all of them?

  112. Natti - # September 5th, 2009 at 12:10 pm

Wow, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWW! An update! Whiipiii! I’m so happy! Oh thank you, thank you Data, our lord.

  116. CrazyFarmer - # September 6th, 2009 at 1:04 pm

  117. endahs - # September 6th, 2009 at 4:21 pm

    good call crazyfarmer

  118. Tendrop - # September 6th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

  119. Beles - # September 7th, 2009 at 12:43 am

    what update?

  120. Footkerchief - # September 7th, 2009 at 6:58 am

lol at the people above me who think Data reads these comments or otherwise gives a shit about his community

  121. Pieman280 - # September 7th, 2009 at 8:45 am

I really love the game, and I’m really grateful for having it, but the amount of time it takes to create the next build is ridiculous at times, and why did he even promise the next few days when it’s clearly going to be in the next 30.

  122. Roon3 - # September 7th, 2009 at 9:27 am

lol at the person above me who thinks Data doesn’t give a shit about his community. Their working on some previews, be patient.

  123. Numgun - # September 7th, 2009 at 10:24 am

Data, anything you do, DO NOT HARDCODE THE CAMPAIGN.
    >: E

  124. Pyris - # September 7th, 2009 at 11:44 am

    @Footkerchef
“lol at the people above me who think Data reads these comments or otherwise gives a shit about his community”

I do believe that he does care about the community. We are his cash source. If he doesn’t listen to us he is eating instant generic mac & cheese for a while. I also believe that he does read the comments.

However, I think data has absolutely no concept of time. Then again you all know gods have no need for our mortal concept of time…

  125. Dabingo - # September 7th, 2009 at 2:26 pm

Oh hell yeah… I was lookin’ forward to seeing what you two would accomplish working side by side, and now I see… It looks really promising! I can’t wait for it!

I just wish that these next few days were a lot less like the next few weeks, but beggars can’t be choosers.

  126. Icchan^ - # September 7th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Hmm I really hope he’s ready someday to implement GPU acceleration to the physics engine and add good threading considering the game engine. I can’t tell what’s that keeps the engine so heavy even for todays hardware, but I relly hope he has priorities: 1. debug 2. utilize todays hardware as best as possible 3. mod support 4. campaign 5. new vanilla content.

There shoudn’t be very much need for new guns or stuff like that, modders keep that in check. But there could be a grave need for different multiplayer modes that are supported by game itself instead of a modders. Rules that make every game mode vastly different and fun to play.

And there’s still some (in my opinion) very important unfixed bugs as this: In certain hardware/software combinations you can’t play with mouse-keyboard against a pad wielding opponent(s). There’s a bug which resets the aiming of mouse player when ever a pad player changes the aim for himself. Tough of a few forum posts, there’s no very much talk about this, but surely that should be quite wide spread bug. As I have witnessed it in countless different software/hardware combinations. Please check this one and get rid of it… it’s very very annoying.

Other than that, I’m looking forward to you next update with much excitement. I have bought CC, and I’m not dissapointed yet in my purchase. Keep it up!

  127. Bluedrake42 - # September 8th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

i think the dev log updater got assassinated…

  128. paintfreak - # September 9th, 2009 at 3:33 pm

anything new????????? im all cortex horny right now :)

  129. =3 - # September 9th, 2009 at 3:53 pm

your brain is horny… PUT A STOP TO THIS DATA!!! WE NEEEEEeeeeD The Precious!(new build)

  130. Geti - # September 9th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

    @ICCHAN^
Currently, i think his priorities fall more in the order of
    1:Campaign and gameplay features
    2:Optimise
    3:Debug
    4:Release
Content development is handled by (interestingly enough) content developers.
regardless, this hopefully means the next version of CC will be more fun to play in general, and hopefully bring a bit more speed.

  131. KupaFM - # September 10th, 2009 at 6:08 am

    hm… five days?

  132. Entharion - # September 10th, 2009 at 4:10 pm

OMG about time! not to sound ungrateful but I’ve been waiting for a long time to see some updates ^^

  133. Ch33n - # September 11th, 2009 at 4:01 pm

Gesch, Data must have travelled through a black hole, thus twisting his perception of time.

    TO THE SKIES, AND AWAAAAY!

  134. Dabingo - # September 12th, 2009 at 9:58 am

Well next few days might be a bit of a stretch, but if you rush a worker, you get rushed work.

  135. Azukki - # September 12th, 2009 at 10:16 am

Yeah it’s reasonable that it takes a few week to summarize the concepts of a couple features.
    Oh yes, perfectly reasonable.

  136. iKP - # September 12th, 2009 at 12:26 pm

“Few Days”… I hope he’s actually working on CC… Data’s clock must be seriously messed up.

  137. Mooseral - # September 12th, 2009 at 12:59 pm

“I am a DATA! I am update on ALL OF THE DAYS”

Hopefully he has gone into an incredibly productive artistic trance, which caused his internet connection to explode in a shower of sparks made of _pure glory_.

    _srsly_

But really, I think we’d all just like to see some of that “very cool new stuff”. I don’t doubt that it is “coming up”, it’s just always nice to know what it is in advance.

No real point to comment on this post at this point, really, as the “post some of the” part of the post has yet to bear fruit. We can, at this point, simply hope that they are _delicious, succulent fruit_.

  138. Mooseral - # September 12th, 2009 at 1:01 pm

Also, apparently italics here don’t work the way I’m used to them working. That last comment could have done with some diagonal words, too… Ah well.

  139. Tomaster - # September 12th, 2009 at 3:35 pm

Let’s play a game on here.

  140. Roon3 - # September 13th, 2009 at 7:34 am

  151. ZevN47 - # September 17th, 2009 at 10:26 am

hmmm… weeks eh?… its been weeks and as of another week from now it will have been a month… hope its a big one (like an awesome campaign)… I’m almost drooling at that thought… also an edit that tells us more specifically what you all are up to would be helpful. Keep up the good work… honestly I thought the devs had gotten swine flu and been stalled :)

  152. Mbbird - # September 17th, 2009 at 5:17 pm

Well that was mean, you said you’d be posting updates and none ever came, unless those pics are your “updates”.

DATA SUCKS MY BALLS, fucking slow ass motherfucker who never wants to update. MY ASS a few days, oh wait now it says WEEKS oh that makes it better.. pffff. dude, look at dwarf fortress, theres been no update in a year, but the guy posts every two days about what hes doing, he shows the updates and he proves that hes doing something other than sitting on his fat duff all day.

  161. Gordag - # September 20th, 2009 at 8:11 pm

    Thank you, Data!
    ..

Appeal to the upper posts. Why do you write a Russian translation?

Обращение к вышестоящим. Зачем вы написали русский перевод?

  162. war_man333 - # September 21st, 2009 at 12:24 am

Yo Data, I’m really happy for you, I’mma let you finish, but Garry Newman was the best of all time at updating his blog. OF ALL TIME.

I’m gonna go ahead and expect an update in the middle of October or something.

  164. Mooseral - # September 21st, 2009 at 5:02 pm

It’s funny, TIGS updated with a photo that Data took.

I dunno, I find that somehow amusing in this context.

  165. tons0phun - # September 21st, 2009 at 9:19 pm

    It’s been a month now.
May we see some of the features and content you have in store for the next build?

Also, when will there be more improvements made for Skirmish?

Also-also, never change the revolver cannon. As it is, that gun is badass.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

  166. FailSauce - # September 21st, 2009 at 10:25 pm

Hey data, you know that thing you do where you keep your fans completely out of the loop about the game they’ve purchased?

    Yeah, that should stop soon.

I understand that you’re busy with the game, but there is NO WAY you are too busy to let us know what you’re doing, or how things are going, or whats happening.

    STEALTH EDIT!

    I CALL SHENANIGANS!
    ——-

He’s actually right. It says ‘weeks’ instead of ‘days’ – Data was probably speaking in Valve days instead of the ones the rest of us use. Silly Data! :>

Really, though, I’m looking forward to this, but the infrequency of updates scares me somewhat. Maybe some of the content developers could help code or something similar – take some of the load off of Data? I don’t know….

  168. FinDude - # September 22nd, 2009 at 7:04 am

    Oh, gdc is over.
Soon we will get a post about it and some random teaser picture and more out-of-the-hat dates.

  169. iKP - # September 23rd, 2009 at 5:31 am

Data! My birthday is the 16th of October! You better have something by then! Consider it a birthday present for your ‘loyal servant’ then…

On a side note, I’m bored right outta my mind. Although I already bought a license, Imma buy a shiny new one (the Support-DataRealms one) just to make these guys work faster…. I also wanna be a Brain on DRL forums. I talk too much, I write too much. UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE WHERE!!!!????

  170. PoE - # September 23rd, 2009 at 6:45 am

Hey guys from Data Realms, maybe you should speak with Valve and include CC into Steam game list? It will become more popular and you will gain more money!

  171. PoE - # September 23rd, 2009 at 6:47 am

And forgot…If you will have more money, you will work faster and make new versions for as mush more FASTER!

  172. Godless - # September 23rd, 2009 at 6:19 pm

you know data, I’m a big fan of Operation Flashpoint,
And I’ve just come to realize how much the upcoming sequel is suffering from being rushed out of development. I appreciate that you guys work hard and take your time. I think I’m okay with waiting knowing you guys give your best.

One of Arne’s (prom’s) comments, on his blog:

“I actually should be working on other stuff now (we’ve been planning to wrap up Cortex Command, as in adding actual content and balanced campaign gameplay), but I damaged a rib so I’m taking it easy until I’ve regained the necessary levels of articulation.”

    …Eh.

Data, what have you been up to? Clearly baseball bats do not make artists work better. Nor does extreme mountain rocket biking.

  175. Ch33n - # September 24th, 2009 at 4:47 am

    Scout is delicious.

I wish Data would remove his brain from his body, implement it into a robot and control an army, taking over star systems in an intergalactic goldru-.

    Oh, wait.

  177. Krumbs - # September 24th, 2009 at 9:52 am

I don’t see that on his blog.

Assuming you are meaning this blog: http://diglett.blogspot.com/

  178. Mooseral - # September 25th, 2009 at 1:08 am

It’s in the comments section of the latest post as of the posting of this comment. HA! I think that was potentially confusing but not necessarily as confusing as it potentially might have been.

But yeah, #162 and #163 have it largely right; Prom should totally become a dismembered brain! Then he can injure none of his ribs! As he can just injure those of his clone cohorts!

Also, scouts? Delicious? I do not fully comprehend which scout it is you allude to.

Still looking forward to the finished product though, whenever it may come out. I’m on all of the topics!

  179. Ch33n - # September 25th, 2009 at 6:43 am

    Well, you know;
Scouts are… Small and munchful. While the chinchilla is a fierce monster which can rip stuff apart with it’s gigantic thumbs.

    I’m just rambling randomly.

‘Ey man, It’s your cousin, want to go bowling together?!

  180. tons0phun - # September 25th, 2009 at 9:23 am

So I’m just gonna shoot a guess here…

Is CC somehow going to tie-in to your project on Starflight?

‘Cause that’d be pretty sick if you could have inter-galactic travel, and then when you land on a planet it goes into CC style gameplay.

    But namely, because of multiplayer.
It’s the only thing keeping this game from being a PC gaming phenomena.

  181. Alexander - # September 25th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
