Mod Contest 5 just went up!

- Make a weapon or an actor that is related to something undead.
- Undead does not specifically mean zombies. It could refer to ghosts, vampires, werewolves, or any other creatures of the night.
- Furthermore, the object itself doesn’t need to be undead, it just has to involve the undead.

Check out the official rules and discuss the contest in the forum.

1. BioBen - # October 7th, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Man, if i could mod, i would so be making a ghostbusters mod right now.

2. CrazyMLC - # October 7th, 2009 at 6:55 pm

You stole my idea, Ben.

3. Duh102 - # October 7th, 2009 at 7:19 pm

I feel… official somehow…

4. No_0ne - # October 7th, 2009 at 8:46 pm

Lets not get TOO original with these mod contests now.

5. Azukki - # October 7th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

I keep thinking I’ll enter a contest sooner or later, but then I never end up actually making anything because I don’t come up with a decent idea, or I don’t bother with it.

Bringing dead enemies back to life on your side would be cool for a necromantic ability. I won’t be doing that though, it would be too complex to get working well.

6. Mooseral - # October 7th, 2009 at 10:14 pm

I’ll be far more interested in modding when some more graphical object editors come out for CC.

An offset/animation editor doesn’t seem like it would be too much trouble, when considering how much of a pain in the arse offsets and animation are right now.

7. war_man333 - # October 8th, 2009 at 12:28 am

I hope people will make ‘realistic’ undead, as in zombies only, zombies are win.
Or ‘gene-modified werewolves’ or some shit.

8. Geti - # October 8th, 2009 at 8:14 am

@moose: wow, you really must not understand how they work. offsets are piss easy once you understand them. and animation is self explanatory, so i dont understand what you mean there, unless you mean actually drawing up the sprites, at which point an in game editor is never going to help you.
tl;dr: cry more.
@war man: no, this is exactly what we dont need, to be honest.
@azukki: just go for it. grab some paper and draw up some ideas. considering the creative scope of this contest, im quite exited.
@andy: seriously, either use general drl or create a community category. this is not cortex command news, but then again i suppose neither was half the stuff data posted in there, so bleh. some organisation would be nice.

all that said, im looking forward to this a lot. ive got a pretty decent idea of what im going to do, i have a lot of work to do when i get back though…

9. Gnome - # October 8th, 2009 at 10:42 am

@GETI Wow mom did u have to be so mean?

10. war_man333 - # October 8th, 2009 at 10:59 am

@Geti, get out.
See what I did there?

11. Will - # October 8th, 2009 at 11:29 am

@Geti NEEERRRRDDD RAAAAAAAAGGGEEEEEE!!!!11!!1

12. carpet_ninja - # October 8th, 2009 at 11:39 am

@ most of you but geti: quit being immature

@ geti: since when did you get the right to talk like that to drl staff members, and though agree with most of what you have said, if you havn’t got anything useful/friendly to say, then dont say it.

13. Lizard - # October 8th, 2009 at 12:20 pm

What are you talking about? Do you suggest that the drl staff is our direct superiors? That’s just silly :P

14. Geti - # October 8th, 2009 at 12:34 pm

@war man: well, each to his own. my opinion is that if we just have a lot of competing zombie only mods the contest will be redundant. i laughed at that response though :P
@carpet ninja: i didnt consider it unsociable to say the category “cortex command” only partially fits the post. i’d pull out the “i’ve been here a while” card but i havent in some regards and i consider andy a PR guy who i can talk to as an equal for the most part anyway, im sure most would agree with me. the only real difference is that data listens to the questions he puts forward, and that he gets to funnel us the news. i dont see it as my right to talk “like that” to DRL staff members, i see it as everyone’s right. the dev log is constantly flooded with “jesus data post more stuff what are you doing having a fap get back to work on my CC that i paid you for bitchbitchmoan.”, so i sort of considered it a fairly tame dig at andy in any light. sorry for inducing a bout of indignation in everyone though.

15. Lenny - # October 8th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

I like this contest: the undead faction strike me as an immoral and technocratic group of scientists, creating cheap clones easily but without the rescourses to equip them properly, instead relying on fear and revulsion. As such they are in a perfect position to push the “dark sci-fi” world-content. Im thinking poorly manufactured gene spliced hybrids, and comatose psychics projecting from the mothership, as “ghosts”.

16. Duh102 - # October 8th, 2009 at 1:29 pm

@Lenny: Hah, I doubt people get that organized. The theme sounds a lot more like a general “Halloween” theme.

17. The Man - # October 8th, 2009 at 1:42 pm

when’s the next build coming out?

18. ZNESS - # October 8th, 2009 at 2:14 pm

sooooo sup guise a little info about the development of the game k thx

19. Fooby - # October 8th, 2009 at 3:55 pm

When -ISN’T- The game coming out? Just so I know to put away my “OMG I <3 DATA" parade till then.

20. HyperKUltra - # October 8th, 2009 at 6:24 pm

Regrettably, Data tends to run on Valve Time. When its done is when it’ll be done. =__=

21. pieman - # October 8th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Werewolves would be super awesome! Zombies are already done, and I’m sure anything that hasn’t been done with them yet, can be done without a contest. But werewolves… that could be interesting! A proper vampire mod would be cool too.

22. Mooseral - # October 8th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

@Geti

If you really enjoy manual point-based keyframe animation techniques done using text editors, have fun with that. I do know that it is (very) possible, and even “easy” in some people’s minds, but that doesn’t make it any less tedious.

And besides, although you can get general animations together that way, tweaking animations without a real-time preview is veritably irritating. I think that there is no doubt that we would have more custom walk paths, and walk paths of a higher quality, if we had some kind of walk path editor.

Not to mention more creative walk paths for a wider range of actors.

You can say that I’m lazy, that I should just learn, etc.

That’s probably because I am lazy, and I don’t want to be buggering about with vectors, points, graphs, or other arbitrary numbers too much when I already get too much of all that jazz at school.

23. Duh102 - # October 8th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

@MOOSEREAL: Actor preview/editor in full game. BOOM. I fixed your problem :D

24. Geti - # October 9th, 2009 at 2:28 am

damnit, duh beat me to it. you can use the actor editor to reload the actor you are working on and to preview non-lua based animation, as well as all related offsets and paths.

25. Ch33n - # October 9th, 2009 at 5:36 am

I demand Ghostbusters.

W/ theme song.

26. Jake - # October 9th, 2009 at 6:45 am

COD5 nazi zombies but in cortex command maybe?

27. ZevN47 - # October 9th, 2009 at 9:06 am

@Everyone: um… this is the first time I have seen flaming… IN THE DEV LOGS!

I’m making something for this Idk if I’ll get done but if I do I hope its awesome enough to get at least a runner up

I had a thought though Could we make a scene to go with our mods?

28. Duh102 - # October 9th, 2009 at 12:39 pm

Yes.

29. Mooseral - # October 9th, 2009 at 11:17 pm

…Eh, indeed. I’d somewhat forgotten about the in-game one.

Although, duh102, it isn’t actually an editor whatever it’s name may claim. I think Data hasn’t actually programmed the editing part of it yet.

And I still lay claim to the fact that manually editing points is tedious! But yeah, at least you can see what you are doing.

30. Lizard - # October 10th, 2009 at 1:50 am

It’s called “Actor viewer”

31. Duh102 - # October 10th, 2009 at 7:37 am

It doesn’t change the values for you, but you can instantly see the effects of changing the values yourself. Also, it works for anything defined in the same .ini as the actor, so you can use it to test a whole mod if you put the definitions in there.

32. Geti - # October 11th, 2009 at 1:10 am

Who’s exited for monday?

33. Tomaster - # October 11th, 2009 at 2:18 pm

Me, I hope Andy goes over something more content related.

34. Duh102 - # October 11th, 2009 at 2:53 pm

I hope it’s the announcement for b24, with tons of fixes for modders. I’m pretty optimistic though.

35. Metalray - # October 11th, 2009 at 5:52 pm

When this game complete ?
I buy it since years now !

36. Duh102 - # October 12th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

Nobody really knows, not even Data. The engine is pretty close to completion though, and the content devs are ready to go as soon as Prom and Data give them something to do.

37. Geti - # October 12th, 2009 at 10:54 pm

anyone else kinda raising their eyebrows at the lack of news inthusfar? its monday or tuesday everywhere in the world now. data was apparently wasted though, so i suppose he ceebs answering stuff.

38. Tomaster - # October 12th, 2009 at 11:02 pm

Andy, I’m disappointed.

39. Ch33n - # October 13th, 2009 at 2:32 am

What happened to all the news?

*Fingers at his pitchfork*

40. CrazyMLC - # October 13th, 2009 at 5:25 am

MLC ANGRY.
MLC WANT MONDAY MAILBAG.

41. ZevN47 - # October 13th, 2009 at 8:00 am

Yes… I predict either a bunch of news sometime to day or a really bad apology tomorrow about how sick Andy is…

*on a slightly more related topic… did the time get changed or extended to Oct. 30? I’m confused :/

anyway for my mod I predict suckishness on an unprecedented level…

42. Duh102 - # October 13th, 2009 at 8:08 am

Extended. It would be a bad move to close the contest and reopen it, if you ask me. But yeah, you have from whenever it started until the 30th to turn in a mod.

43. ZevN47 - # October 13th, 2009 at 10:48 am

Awesome. Why was it extended? Just to make it more Halloween related?

44. Duh102 - # October 13th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Yep. It’s a pretty Halloween-esque theme anyway, so why not?

45. The Man - # October 13th, 2009 at 4:11 pm

I NEED MONDAY MAILBAG!!!!

46. Mooseral - # October 14th, 2009 at 12:29 pm

First thing that came into my head on the topic of the last few posts.

47. Apnea - # October 14th, 2009 at 1:47 pm

Hey Guys, I just had the most pleasant dream : the Devlog was like, up-dated somewhat biweekly with all sorts of cool stuff like “mailbag”, “concept art”, “q&a”. All written by some happy gnome hired by Data. People were all visiting the devlog more often, expectations rising-

Then I woke up. Harsh.

48. Tomaster - # October 14th, 2009 at 2:01 pm

@Mooseral
I was gunna say that, but I didn’t feel like injecting a meme into this devlog. It’s too innocent for that.

49. Pyrokinesis - # October 14th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

It’s WEDNESDAY!!
What happened to the MONDAY mailbag?!
We finally get something, anything on the devlog, and now it’s gone. *sobs*
Gone, all gone… *mumble*

50. ZevN47 - # October 14th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

Maybe Andy meant every week datarealms time?

51. Airburst - # October 14th, 2009 at 5:40 pm

Look you guys, a new build:

52. Cody - # October 14th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

53. Geti - # October 14th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

from email:
“I’ve definitely got diabolical things planned, but Data was at TIGJam this last week and is utterly exhausted. :) Soon we’ll be on track and posting regularly.”
-Andy

54. Duh102 - # October 14th, 2009 at 6:56 pm

I would have been entertained by a summary of TIGJam… Or the pictures of the eventual bar hop.

55. Geti - # October 14th, 2009 at 8:35 pm

yeah, im sure its coming in some form or another. the fact that andy replied within 3 hours has me consoled, as well as a bit shocked. email from DRL within 3 working days? you must be joking.

56. missing_cipher - # October 15th, 2009 at 2:55 pm

*Crosses arms*

Where’s ma devlog?

57. Azukki - # October 15th, 2009 at 5:19 pm

Airburst, sort of funny reading that.

“Ability to force reload of all ini’s without restarting game, will be in next build.”

58. Tomaster - # October 15th, 2009 at 5:24 pm

@Geti
I sent off an email last week and still haven’t gotten the e-mail.

59. Mooseral - # October 15th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

@Airburst

It even has a working gold dig AI!
(it’s funny ’cause it’s true)

Also, I need a new screen name. This one seems to have a 50% spelling fail rate. :(

60. Ch33n - # October 16th, 2009 at 12:32 am

IT WAS ALL LIIIIES! MONDAY MAILBAG WAS LIIIIIIES
AAAAAGH
*Goes down the road with the razor*

61. ZevN47 - # October 16th, 2009 at 8:28 am

*follows CH33N with another razor*

@MOOSERAL: I want those working Gold Dig AI BAD…

62. ^^^thatguy^^^ - # October 16th, 2009 at 8:31 am

I notice that when devlog rate goes down that the random posts of hate go up…

CURSE YOU TIGJAM!!!!!!!!!!!

63. The Man - # October 16th, 2009 at 1:01 pm

I think Andy may have died

64. Geti - # October 16th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

He’s online on the forums now..

65. pieman - # October 16th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Did data fire andy? [/sarcasm]

I guess he just ran out of things to talk about. we’ll get more info either when the build is released, or data gives him more info.

66. Mooseral - # October 16th, 2009 at 5:06 pm

I guess that people can hardly complain about a lack of any updates when they complained previously about updates about things that were not specifically CC-engine related.

Then again, I’d personally prefer that Andy draw a picture of a goat and put it up here rather than not post things at all.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=we9_CdNPuJg

67. Ch33n - # October 17th, 2009 at 1:12 am

Goat crab, please.

68. Airburst - # October 17th, 2009 at 8:59 pm

@Mooseral: I agree, any post would be better than to post. Even a badly drawn picture made in paint, or a photo of his dog. I don’t care.

69. ZNESS - # October 18th, 2009 at 12:11 am

Lol, this new guy was short lived.

70. Ch33n - # October 18th, 2009 at 4:22 am

I think he ditched to Vegas with the monies.

71. Alexander - # October 18th, 2009 at 11:54 am

It’s been ten days man get up on it.
These builds come sparse enough that these logs are what keep some of us interested.

72. Echo - # October 18th, 2009 at 1:18 pm

Yay. Lets start with daily updates. Then go to weekly. Then just stop. Way to fail with the devlog again…

73. Mooseral - # October 18th, 2009 at 4:32 pm

These logs come sparse enough that these builds are what keep some of us interested.

Wait, that’s not it.

(well eventually, hopefully)
(or something like that)

74. ZevN47 - # October 18th, 2009 at 4:45 pm

The day after the next sun sets will bring with it the fabled monday mailbag. For if it does not the streets will run red with the falseupdaters.

(could not type that without laughing my arse off)

75. pieman - # October 18th, 2009 at 4:55 pm

I think we should be complaining about the game more than the devlog. I feel like it’s had enough time. It better be worth the wait.

The devlog is just having a slow moment. many dev logs go through this. The game on the other hand seems to be slow, and at times has only little updates (This one will probably be big).

76. Geti - # October 18th, 2009 at 5:34 pm

wow, way to pile on the ingratitude guys.

77. Duh102 - # October 18th, 2009 at 6:15 pm

Honestly I don’t feel the need for a new build any more than 6 months or a year between. If we did, we’d never get any mods done before they were rendered obsolete. And really, if you think about it, mods are what keep Cortex alive.

78. Mooseral - # October 18th, 2009 at 7:05 pm

Personally, I’m over-blowing it because I think that many of these responses are generally silly. I genuinely do hope that Andy comes out of Vegas with sacks of money, and Data defeats the evil oppressor that is his (probable) indie hangover.

Until then, goats. And doing silly things involving fiddling with grammar and ludicrous turns of phrase, potentially involving inordinate numbers of syllables.

@Duh102; It’s probably true, although more frequent updates of the vanilla content might not hurt (as it is usually released needing help of one kind or another, and balance changes aren’t worth engine updates).

Perhaps since the vanilla content is generally in fairly standard mod-format .rte files, there could be content patch versions or something (like Build XX.YY [where X is engine revision and Y is content revision]). But then again, Data is probably fine with it the way it is, so mreh, it’s all good.

79. Tomaster - # October 18th, 2009 at 7:55 pm

Did Pieman’s comment seem somewhat stupid to anyone?

80. Mooseral - # October 18th, 2009 at 8:40 pm

Actually, I just noticed that. Yes actually, it does seem rather stupid, I must say.

It’s not like we don’t have a good game already.

And if “this one will probably be big”, why complain now?

81. Ch33n - # October 19th, 2009 at 7:54 am

Soup, my fellow townsmen.
Soup in my pants!

82. Metalray - # October 19th, 2009 at 9:56 am

Lol it didn’t take long before the daily newsletter stop populating my mail box :)

When is the next version of CC ??
It’s getting really long for a supported price :-(

83. Duh102 - # October 19th, 2009 at 10:17 am

Sometime. Next version, month or two. Probably (December 21st) 2012 for the big switchover from reduced to regular price.

84. ZevN47 - # October 19th, 2009 at 11:21 am

… Waaait… December 21, 2012 is when the apocalypses happens…

OH! the next build is a sign of the apocalypse yes i get it now

OH IDEA!: Apocalypse Faction for Mod Contest hrm… :? no my first idea is good enough

85. Duh102 - # October 19th, 2009 at 11:27 am

Nah, next build is close, like I said a month or two. When the game goes from production to release though is probably Dec. 21 2012.

86. The Man - # October 19th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Now Andy owes us two monday mailbags.

87. CrazyMLC - # October 19th, 2009 at 1:08 pm

We better have a long Devlog post ahead of us.

88. Madmax - # October 19th, 2009 at 3:01 pm

So much for the frequent developer updates.

89. Yay - # October 19th, 2009 at 3:03 pm

I don’t like Andy anymore…

*cut* *cut* *cut*

ccrrraaaavvvlliing iiinn myyyy skiiiinn… theesee woouu.. nnn… heaeeaall… bees.. *faints*

90. CrazyMLC - # October 19th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

Hey, peeps, Data is too busy to supply Andy with constant info, that’s the problem.
Except that’s a good thing, that Data is busy, right?

91. Duh102 - # October 19th, 2009 at 4:49 pm

It depends on what he’s busy with. It could be his guns, it could be his drink, it could be his wife… List goes on before you get to Cortex.
That reminds me. If Data has a child, he should name it Dafred. Not really, though that would be funny.

92. CrazyMLC - # October 19th, 2009 at 7:08 pm

Naughty boy, ho, ho ho.

93. Duh102 - # October 19th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Hm? Whatever are you talking about? His rifle could be jamming incessantly, his lemonade could have had too little sugar in it, and his wife could be having him cart around boxes of junk from the attic.

94. CrazyMLC - # October 19th, 2009 at 9:26 pm

Carting around boxes of junk makes plenty of babies, yes.
I’m sure Dafred jr. is already on his way, ho, ho, ho.

95. Geti - # October 19th, 2009 at 10:14 pm

There hasnt been a Dafred Sr. yet has there? O_o
But yeah, he gets both props and raised eyebrows if he names his first male child dafred. Mostly raised eyebrows though.
Andy, stop lagging :)

96. pieman - # October 20th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Some of you guys want to say my post is stupid, when tons of people are complaining about a pause in the devlog. You guys make me laugh! I’m not insulting anyone, I’m just pointing out how it makes no sense.

I just said I thought the game wasn’t progressing up to speed!
