Posted by Andy in Cortex Command - December 5th, 2009

Wandering around on the intertubes the other day, both Dan and I independently came across this cool Zero-gravity experiments video. A guy makes a sphere of water in (held together in zero-g by a loop of wire) and does neat things like injecting air bubbles into it and making waves. Worth a watch!

It reminded us of a cool game called Osmos. There’s a trailer you can watch of the game here for comparison.

Osmos has, like Cortex Command, has won an IGF award too! It really is a lot of fun and is a very new and unique game mechanic. Check out the demo here.

Speaking of other games, have any of you checked out Minecraft?

    @AIRBURST

    Like this:

    Name: Dummy Brawler Championship

This competition will be played on the Astro scene with only dummies and no weapons(for you). The goal of the game is to smash as many puny ronin soldiers as you can!

    Rules:
-Only vanilla Cortex Command with Astro scene added(no tinkering you bastards!)
-You can only buy dummies (Nothing else no weapons, bombs, tools…)
-You can only use dropcrates(no rockets, dropships…)
-You can only buy 1 dummy/dropcrate at once
    -Using/picking up weapons is forbidden
-Final kill count is your score (so if a bird comes and flies into a ronin soldier knocking it into another one and killing both ronins in the process that’s 2 kills for you etc.)

    How to participate:
Record a video with you playing.
Breaking the rules may result in finger wagging and your video being deemed invalid.
Every participants last submitted video will be the one which gets scored.

    Determining the winner:
    1)By the most final kills
    2)By less time taken
    3)By less final losses
    4)By Weasel’s pick(bribing is forbidden)

The winner is determined by 1) in case of a tie by 2) in case of a tie by 3) in case of a tie by 4)
    Just to be clear.
    ——————————–

I imagined it like this… sort of 😀 and with the help of modders there can be ‘proper’ competition maps made for specific uses.

The problem here would be strengthening the dummy or something. Not that detectable, and we would have to rely on people’s sense of integrity.

I’m worried. Okay, I said it.

I know you guys were thinking it, but I needed to say it.

    Don’t give up Data!

Eh, you guys are some of the weirdest prsons I have ever met.

Because you don’t hear anything from a person means that said person is dead?

Is your cousin dead if you haven’t heard from him in half a year?

  7. Yay - # January 22nd, 2010 at 6:40 am

“Is your cousin dead if you haven’t heard from him in half a year?”

    Could be…

Have we ever taken the theory of data dieing seriously? Cause i reckon he’s dead. Not even a check up? Not even something like, “Hey sorry we haven’t given you updates at all on anything even in the smallest way on the devlog” comon’ Release some updates for the people who actually bought the game, just a littttllleee hint, that you’re not dead/zombie.

Okay I have another competition for you!

    I’m going to think of a number between 1 and 20 !
The person who guesses the number gets an e-cookie.

Apparently CC runs better on my laptop the size of two dvd covers than on my big blocky computer.

  16. AttackOfFlamingPigs - # January 24th, 2010 at 6:17 am

    @LIZARD

    What’s your laptop?

Oh and I haven’t started the competition yet.

    The competition starts… NOW!

Hmmm then I might try CC on my netbook too.

  20. airburst - # January 24th, 2010 at 2:21 pm

@Lizard – The concept art for that game is really cool.
I don’t quite understand what is going on though in terms of gameplay though…

  21. Kzerog - # January 25th, 2010 at 7:55 am

IMO it looks pretty good. I like the way the gameplay is coming out. And the concept art looks just like Arne’s other work. He has that distinct drawing style.

  22. airburst - # January 25th, 2010 at 3:25 pm

    Any other programmer done GridWorld?
    If you haven’t, be glad.

    Just so you know ♥

  24. ShiroTheSniper - # January 27th, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Recently, we hear more news about other games than CC…

    IMO, something’s wrong.

Nice try Endahs, this isn’t dying until Data appeases the masses with weasel’s bloodied corpse.

  27. AttackOfFlamingPigs - # January 28th, 2010 at 8:02 am

    Gridworld what?

  28. Bluedrake42 - # January 28th, 2010 at 9:24 am

Something is very wrong with this game… did someone die?

  29. tons0phun - # January 28th, 2010 at 2:03 pm

Stand back everybody, I’m going to try something ENTIRELY unprecedented in the history of dev logs!

    *Ahem*

May we -please- have a dev-log update regarding the progress of the latest build?
It can even just be art clips, or more teasers.
Or if you are stuck, or even if nothing has happened, that’s okay too.
We like your updates because they are informative, and some times funny too.

We, the fans, hope things are going well and appreciate your hard work. Keep it up!

  30. Tomaster - # January 28th, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Not gunna work, mainly because Data doesn’t give a flying fuck how we ask, he’ll release the updates whenever he goddamn well feels like it. Motherfucker.

  31. Yay - # January 28th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Eh, That was not a very nice thing to say, Tomaster… But I agree.

  33. AttackOfFlamingPigs - # January 29th, 2010 at 8:04 am

Well he shouldn’t release an update when he doesn’t feel like releasing an update because if he does what he doesn’t feel like doing he will probably get depressed and commit suicide or worse he will use the devlog to express his emotions about how existence is pointless so making Cortex Command is pointless too.
While if he does what he likes doing(hopefully this includes working on CC) he will remain happy and while Data lives there’s always a hope of a new release or an update… or a Data with a big grin on his face swimming in the money which he got from CC.

  34. Yay - # January 29th, 2010 at 9:17 am

No, we need to chain him to that chair!

  35. AttackOfFlamingPigs - # January 30th, 2010 at 11:32 am

Make sure that you don’t chain him to a wheeled-chair otherwise he will escape when you are not watching to do some extreme chair riding in the mountains.

    ^^^ zing

  37. Endahs - # January 31st, 2010 at 9:21 am

Okay, I have a theory of why Data or anyone else hasn’t been posting new updates. It goes a little something like this: Data has set up only one computer to be able to post new updates EXCEPT get this, its in a giant labyrinth made of heated glass suspended over an everlasting abyss that spirals into darkness.
Data can only access said computer by wearing the sacred suit of armor that has the 3000 digit password to the computer etched into it. Data must fast for 3 days before his journey with no food and very little water. He must complete his task perfectly or he will be unable to access the computer again. He also might die in the everlasting abyss that spirals into darkness. However andy has another identical computer with the same capabilities in his house but hes just a lazy douche.

  47. tons0phun - # February 2nd, 2010 at 6:36 pm

We could always ask for an update politely and with an air of humbleness.

Well, YOU all could anyways. 😛
