Wandering around on the intertubes the other day, both Dan and I independently came across this cool Zero-gravity experiments video. A guy makes a sphere of water in (held together in zero-g by a loop of wire) and does neat things like injecting air bubbles into it and making waves. Worth a watch!

It reminded us of a cool game called Osmos. There’s a trailer you can watch of the game here for comparison.

Osmos has, like Cortex Command, has won an IGF award too! It really is a lot of fun and is a very new and unique game mechanic. Check out the demo here.

Speaking of other games, have any of you checked out Minecraft?

Dear Data n’ everybody,

My birthday is coming up in a few days and I was just wondering if there was any sort of estimation on when the next build will be coming out. I think I speak for everyone when I say that it has been a long wait and we’re real excited for this forthcoming build. Official position: During the middle of a maintenance session, something went wrong and they had to redo the entire thing. Web, forum, and IRC, all in one.
Only thing to do is wait for WJ or whoever to fix it, which it looks like they’re doing.

Well, i mean, yes, the devlog dose tend to get quite silly once the posts get past 100, but thats the thing.. if the devlog was updated when it was said to be, then the posts wouldent be so off topic and insane. The reason why this happens in the first place its because we run out of real CC related things to talk about around post one hundred. If the devlog was updated as much as it was said it would be, our post wouldent even REACH 100!
so i think we can have alittle fun and games now and again!
And im not blameing DATA or anyone else, im sure it is very hard to creat ontopic things about CC every week..thats no big deal. I’m, as most of you are, fond of CC, and really waiting for DR to come with another build.
Though, if I were an indie developper, and read something like “shitrealms”, I don’t think I would invest myself in working harder.
Please, please, keep calm, having paid a few dollars does not give you the right to write such things, exactly the same way that DataRealms has no obligation to post everyday for a bunch of impatient guys.

The one thing I always find amusing is the lack of patience and tolerance to either side of the argument.

On one hand I hear moderators saying that Data owes us nothing, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Where would CC be if nobody bought the game? Or spread it by word of mouth? Or provided feedback, and help foster a community for it? It wouldn’t have gotten this far, that’s for sure.

But the door swings both ways: I can’t count how many hours I must have sunken into this game whether it was staying up late nights by myself playing the game, learning how to modify things, or playing it with friends whom also enjoyed it. And I owe all those good times to Data’s [and friends'] patience and prudence in developing such an awesome game.

So, in short: we should point the finger at nobody but Andy for being so lazy.

But I already gave money to indie games that came nowhere close to release, and I can’t blame them for not being strong enough to stand against the giants of this world.

For example I gave 50$ to Rubies Of Eventide to get small advantages online, and help them get the engine to date… about a month before they closed the servers

But, yes indeed, we’re helping them and they could at least wave a hand once or twice a week. I think every argument on this subject should end with the words “Andy”, “Lazy” and a meaningful groan!

What I’d really like to see in terms of CC development is simply further refining of the actual game-parts. I can understand if Data can’t refine the physics any further, as he is probably getting pretty sick of the engine by now and it’s not like there is any better pixel physics engine out there at the moment.

Just adding in things like the ability to pick a specific faction at the beginning of a game (even if just to reduce menu clutter) would be great. Really, CC could be a finished product with it’s current engine base; the physics have always been silly, and I can’t see them becoming less silly in the near future. It’s one of those bug-feature things, to some extent.

Then again, the prior history of CC suggests that Data is off on some mysterious codey hiatus, and who knows what may arrive. If he is getting tired of the project though, some general fit and finish type work would be nice, primarily just to make CC even better for dicking about with friends.

We shall see what we shall see is pretty much the only conclusion that can be drawn from the dev log right now, from my perspective.

I bet things will get real fucked up if Weasel or Data don’t show up before the christmas mod competition deadline. Just to clarify: I know it’s normal that there are no updates.

1. It’s Cortex Command, we’ve seen this happen.
2.The game is not dead.
3.The fact that there’s a guy hired to update the devlog should mean more frequent updates.
4.But since he has to send the updates to Data first it makes the updating process just as long as before.
5.Result: annoyed fans, no solution to the update problem, worthless blogger.

That pretty much sums up things as they are now though i have some sympathy for Weasel. It must be really frustrating not being able to do his job. Data really isn’t a dream employer.

Name: Dummy Brawler Championship

This competition will be played on the Astro scene with only dummies and no weapons(for you). The goal of the game is to smash as many puny ronin soldiers as you can!

Rules:
-Only vanilla Cortex Command with Astro scene added(no tinkering you bastards!)
-You can only buy dummies (Nothing else no weapons,bombs,tools…)
-You can only use dropcrates(no rockets,dropships…)
-You can only buy 1 dummy/dropcrate at once
-Using/picking up weapons is forbidden
-Final kill count is your score (so if a bird comes and flies into a ronin soldier knocking it into another one and killing both ronins in the process that’s 2 kills for you etc.)

How to participate:
Record a video with you playing.
Breaking the rules may result in finger wagging and your video being deemed invalid.
Every participants last submitted video will be the one which gets scored.

Determining the winner:
1)By the most final kills
2)By less time taken
3)By less final losses
4)By Weasel’s pick(bribing is forbidden)

The winner is determined by 1) in case of a tie by 2) in case of a tie by 3) in case of a tie by 4)
Just to be clear.

I imagined it like this… sort of and with the help of modders there can be ‘proper’ competition maps made for specific uses.

Well he shouldn’t release an update when he doesn’t feel like releasing an update because if he does what he doesn’t feel like doing he will probably get depressed and commit suicide or worse he will use the devlog to express his emotions about how existence is pointless so making Cortex Command is pointless too.
While if he does what he likes doing(hopefully this includes working on CC) he will remain happy and while Data lives there’s always a hope of a new release or an update… or a Data with a big grin on his face swimming in the money which he got from CC.

Okay, I have a theory of why Data or anyone else hasn’t been posting new updates. It goes a little something like this: Data has set up only one computer to be able to post new updates EXCEPT get this, its in a giant labyrinth made of heated glass suspended over an everlasting abyss that spirals into darkness.
Data can only access said computer by wearing the sacred suit of armor that has the 3000 digit password to the computer etched into it. Data must fast for 3 days before his journey with no food and very little water. He must complete his task perfectly or he will be unable to access the computer again. He also might die in the everlasting abyss that spirals into darkness. However andy has another identical computer with the same capabilities in his house but hes just a lazy douche.
