Ship GibsI know some of you are really getting anxious about a new build; here’s the situation:

Up till now the test builds have been a great way for us to evaluate what works and what doesn’t, and with the great community feedback and support we have an idea of what you like too.

Even though the tests have been fun to play in their own right, they were little more than half-finished game engines with some temporary data thrown in to try the different systems out. They did not really represent the larger gameplay design we have planned for the final product. Sure, the gun battles and basic elements are there, but the base building phase and more emphasis on strategy and tactics over twitchy action wasn’t.

Now that we have a framework and and idea of what’s fun, it’s time to build the real game. The project is at a point where we’re taking apart and rebuilding a lot of areas, and replacing most of the old temporary test data with fresh new art assets. It’s just not conducive to putting out tests as frequently as some of you have become used to.

Another reason for not putting out new builds while we’re changing things so drastically is that each one would break all the mods that are already out there.

So, while I will try to keep this devlog a little more frequently updated on things we’re working on, don’t expect test builds nearly as often as before. There may only be one or two left before we put out a version that really starts to look like the final product.

If you can’t handle the waiting, then why not submit your email address above, and give it a break. You’ll get an email every time anything new is announced.

    harder to build mods, when they are like legos.

    But it would work better
    and more custumisability would be added to the game.

    but unfortunately as the test build close and the new game comes out… well we won’t be useful when it comes to making the ACTUAL game. so im kinda sad. oh well we should make the best of our time and throw in any comments left we would like.

    It looks to me on that picture like there will be plates under the dropships, I bet those would have to be shot off before making the ship loose health, like shields ^^ .

    Thank you for the update. I really don’t mind waiting for a long time for a build, just keep us updated. Maybe an update every week or so. that would be great, and make us feel better and put us at ease.

    not been modding too long but now no mods will work, will they… which happens on mostly every new build but meh…

    *sigh* more work will now be needed to make one of them gib heirarchy things and probably more script due to better physics, but its for the best.

    I for one love this method of video game development. As a follower you get to play the game though out the whole development process and learn how the game was made and grow with it.

    Garry’s Mod did the same thing and that’s why it’s so popular. That plus the mods.

    I can’t believe anyone would care about not having a new demo. The fact that you guys are really starting to make huge changes and massive progress is the best possible thing I could hear about the project.

    For far too long, I would visit datarealms every few months and see the same animated GIFs on the front page, the same old posts in the forums… this rules.

    Since the twitchy action aspects are already a working subset of the gameplay, we’ll be able to make pure action game modes, no problem.

    why dont you put in buildings like refinerys, factorys, cloning facilitys, fortifications or upgrades for buildings!

    and maybe special ammo for guns like uranium, anti matter or thorium charges.

    carpet_ninja@ buildings are a no, no. of course thats data’s call but i think thats more of a command and conquer type thing . and I’ve tried proposing different bullets. but it was shot down with the fact that each weapon has it’s own special ammo anyway.

    and i valve buys this from data. im going to shoot someone. (most likely valve) *hint hint* *wink wink*. because of all the games that they make or buy halfway through the making are great. but because steam is a steam(ing pile of shit) their games are server reliant which means playing those games is a bitch. bugs, random crashes, steam utterly controls when you play. if steam is broken… you got no games, if steam even suspects you of hacking (which is annoying because they can only tell from complaints.) they shut down your account meaning you lose all your games and the money you spent on them. no refunds. but my angered rabbling aside this is going to be a great game.

    Well because I do have school, I guess its ok for the new versions to come out later on.

    But if it where the holidays that would not be very good.

    Anyway it is still nice Data Realms is one of the only development team that releases Test Builds and listen to feedback. Doing that keeps the game on track.

    *Sigh* I’ve tried to write this message twice, but it seems like the blog’s down for the moment or something. Maybe the comments are submitted, but for some reason not displayed. Anyway, I’ll try one last time, so sorry if this turns out to be a tripple post.

    In response to the “addition ammo” suggestion way up by Makeshifter:
    I don’t really believe I’m the only one who’s thought about this, but I might have a solution to the problem with all weapons firing different kinds of ammo. I don’t know how easy/hard it’d be to code, but at least it looks nice:

    Magazine = Magazine
    CopyOf = Magazine AK-47
    SecondaryMagazine = Magazine
    CopyOf = Magazine Base Uranium
    SecondaryMagazine = Magazine
    CopyOf = Magazine Base Explosive

    So as you can see, this’d allow you to buy a couple of magazines with extra powerfull bullets for any weapon that has the magazine specified in it’s description. Since the magazines would be in a different menu from the weapons, the only magazines you would be able to buy would be the ones compatible with the last weapon in your list. The idea probably needs some fiddling, but I for one would like to see something like this in-game.

    Whatev’, it’s worth it.
    I don’t think data will keep this thing free. It’s just too damn great for it. ^^

    Well, I’m happy that the real work starts. Maybe we don’t have as much updates as before, but the real commercial game will be better than any beta. (Campaign!) (Tactics!) (Vehicles?)

    When I start releasing games, they will be REALLY cheap. (Because I think people will buy something if the impact on their wallet is less than the impact on their conscience for “stealing” the game)

    Anyway, it’s funny. All this time we really had no idea how incomplete the game we were playing still was. We were thinking; “Cool! Add better AI, better gibs, more levels, and all the stuff for campaign mode and we’ve got ourselves a game!”, when in reality, this is only the beginning…. of the end… of the practice builds… of Cortex Command

    It’s nice to know that a more dynamic system is being implemented for gibbing. The current system is extremely limited in what can be done with it, and gibs on large objects like rockets and dropships don’t look right because they all spawn from the exact center of the ship and not the spot that they are supposed to look like they came from. I was wondering…

    As far as that picture goes, I think that your creations have graduated from the mere title of “gibs” and can now be proudly called “Wreckage”!

    Also, I’m just glad that we’re going to be getting some closer-to-finished test builds before the game goes into pre-release “static” and we don’t know what’s goin’ on anymore.

    If CC is free in the final version I am going to be dissapointed. Because then Data Realms would not of made a profit.

    If CC is not free then Data Realms would make them a profit. Meaning we can expect more cool and fun games from them.

    Anyways I would like to ask from those people who want tanks and jeeps and other that kind of stuff, that how are they planning to make them to actually work in CC so that they don’t look stupid? I mean do you just use foward and reverse or does the vehicle just flip like Paper Mario when you want to turn it. And also the ground doesn’t really fit for ground vehicles. Its bit bumpy and I bet with a jeep you would be upside down after first hill…

    Maybe some sort of hover crafts would work, but I think that would only cause you to collide with rockets that has landed…

    So I think, land vehicles are bad idea…

    I agree. I think any land vehicles are stupid. They have no way to implement them without looking retarded. Think about this: Soldiers fighting feircely in battle, explosions going off, and there is a tank. Then one brave soldier aproaches the back of the tank, and raises his gun. Suddenly, the tank flips as if it is made of paper, then boom!

    Ya… but no thanks. No vehicles.

    Myself I wouldnät buy the game if it was over $20, but indie games seldom are, and I wouldn’t excpect this one to be that either. $15 would be perfect IMO.

    I think land vehicles can be implemented.

    Imagine a tank with the track on the bottom either going forwards or backwards.

    It could have a turret like thing at the top to aim with.

    @Jell-O: But think of it. We’ve followed the development of this game for quite some time now, and it’ll take much, much longer for them to finish the game. Should they just give it away for free? It shouldn’t cost as much as games made by large-scale companies (even if the final CC version’s gonna be equaly fun to play) but they should definently get something for the effort. And if some people are pirating the game it’ll spread as much as if it was free, but would still generate some cash for data and realms (I dunna what to call the rets of the team). If you don’t have a credit card then give some money to your parents and ask them to buy it for you. Als

    If everything else fails, I’m sure the last testversion will be about as fun as most commersial games around. That’s what makes CC so special, even a small practice version like Build13 is equal to many other games.

    This is truly awesome. Keep it up. Even though I can’t see them full size, I’m nearly drooling at some of that art in there, and the thought of all of it together is sounding so sweet.

    You guys keep sharp and keep working. Next build I expect maybe a mission or two, a normal sandbox survival mode, and a base builder if you guys are really working at it. (Not to mention some logical AI as opposed to the guys who run at walls and dig through solid concrete.)

    I want to see some vehicles some time soon, too. I wouldn’t call that as important as rounding out the current features though. Of course, that’s just me. Keep it up guys!

    I know this is greedy of me, but Data, could you just tweak something with the old build and give us that to keep us occupied?

    Just one thing. Could you just make some tiny change that allows us to define what enemies and weapons the computer uses?

    Like…in the scene code…something like…

    Enemy = AHuman
    CopyOf = Robot
    HeldDevice = SMG
    etc.

    But yeah, good job, keep going with it, I understand, etc.

    the reason I thought that is because when i got steam and when I went to buy the original Half Life it was $9 and it was about just as good as this is probably going to turn out. *thumbs up*

    For the game… 20 or 15€ would be ok, as I payed 20 for Toribash, which is my other favorite indie game.

    Also, I hope it will be bought online, so a big part of the money goes to Data. Maybe by Steam, think on it Data ;) ; it is indie’s games paradise (and, if you’re not like the others, you could tell us which part of the money arrives to you, but I think Valve gets the 20% or so)

    And not only does it rely completely on the processor, it not even compatible with multiple cores! I know that probably isn’t the first thing you think of when making a game, so I odn’t copmlain about this build, but when it takes fully advantage of my computer, it’ll run sooo much smoother (which probably will be needed with all the extra stuff Data’s adding.

    On a side note, is DaTa an abbrevation for Dan Tab? It could be good to now before I make some kind of misstake…

    Shalafi! I too am an 18 year old lurking on the Datarealms site, a veritable slave to the update. And, indeed, Cortex Command- me and my bro have played hours of the stuff. Man, when online play is implimented, this community should really take off- already sizable.

    In closing, I love you Datrealms guys and I’ll be willing to shell out some mulah for the final build- if the game is alreay this good, the finished product should be a milestone for indie gaming. No hyperbole! …not much, anyway.
